Chapter Eight

Freeport, Bahamas

Two weeks later

It was the same thing every day, and that night was no different. After dinner, the Black family went outside and sat by the pool to watch the sun go down. Slowly, one by one, each would drift inside. M was always the first one to go and said good night after the sun set. Easy was next.

After spending the day, running around and playing with Michelle for hours, he always climbed onto Shy’s lap and fell asleep. And as usual, Michelle, not wanting to miss anything or be outdone by her baby brother, shortly thereafter would sit on Black’s lap. Once Easy was asleep, Shy took him in and put him to bed. “You’re next, young lady,” she said when she came back out.

“I’m not tired, Mommy,” Michelle said as Shy sat down next to Black.

“Okay, we’ll see about that.” It was never long after that when Michelle would fall asleep and Black would get up to take her inside.

The same thing every night.

The only difference about that particular night was that Shy was excited. Although she enjoyed being at home with her family, she was bored with the daily routine. But that night she was excited because the following day the family was traveling to New York.

Black had promised Shy that they could buy a house in New York. He understood his wife all too well. Black knew that Shy would get bored with the slow lifestyle they had in Freeport. He had no desire to have an unhappy Shy on his hands for fear of what that could possibly lead to, so he made a concession. “You know that Michelle will be starting school in the fall. As long as you understand that in the years that follow, it will just be for the summer.”

“You mean it?”

“Anything to make you happy,” Black said. And being a man of his word, they were going to look at houses.

The following morning the family boarded a charter flight and a few hours later, they landed at White Plains Airport. Bobby, Pam and RJ met them at the airport. After the customary amount of hugs and kisses, the Black and Ray families went to Bobby’s house. Once they got to the house, it didn’t take long for Black and Bobby to head downstairs to the basement. They had been down there for a while when RJ came down the steps carrying Easy.

“What I tell you about coming down here when me and Uncle Mike are talking business?” Bobby said.

“Cut him some slack, Bobby. They don’t need to be up there with all them women,” Black said.

“He’s right, Pop. They got a little fashion show going on up there. Barbara and them up there showing off their new clothes for Aunt Shy, and they talkin’ about going shopping in the morning,” RJ said and sat down across from Bobby, and Easy went and sat next to his father.

Black laughed. “They belong down here with us, Bob.” He looked at RJ.
