Chapter Eight

It had been only about six-thirty when Ryan and Chris had retreated to their hotel room after the Lukas incident, and they were spending the time quietly, just unwinding. Friday to Sunday was going to be busy for both of them, but especially for Chris, so Ryan wanted him to take the relaxation where he could get it.

It was almost nine, both of them tucked up against each other on the bed, Chris on his tablet and Ryan with his computer in his lap getting some work done, when Ryan jolted up with realization.

“Ryan?” Chris asked, looking at him. “Everything okay?”

“You didn’t eat dinner,” Ryan said pointing a finger at him. “I forgot!”

“Oh.” Chris rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, I guess I did too. That’s a good point.”

Ryan tried to tamp down his unhappy frown. He tried so hard to remember that Chris needed to eat in the regular human-person way. He was usually better at it than this. With the travel and business of the day, it had slipped his mind, and it had clearly slipped Chris’s mind, and now it was hours and hours since Chris had last eaten. He couldn’t help but feel like it was partially his fault. Ryan had been the one to need to retreat to the hotel room and turn in early.

Chris checked his phone. “It’s only ten to nine. There are a lot of places still open. The hotel’s restaurant would be fine.”

“Is there anything you’re in the mood for?” Ryan asked. “We can go out. I don’t mind.”

Chris shook his head. “I’m fine with just heading downstairs, if it’s alright with you.”

“Sure, that sounds good.” Ryan looked down at himself. “Should I change?”

“Only if you want to,” Chris said. “It’s not a fancy place or anything. They won’t kick you out for showing up in sweatpants.”

“Okay,” Ryan decided. It wasn’t like his clothes were ratty. Just kind of big on him. “Let’s go.”

They slid on their shoes and grabbed wallets, then headed down the hall to the elevator.

“I don’t remember much about what the place serves,” Chris said when Ryan asked if he had an idea of what he wanted. “I think it’s just typical Americana. But if you have anything you’re in the mood for, we could find a place.”

Ryan tried to think of something as the elevator took them down to the main floor, but came up empty. “Maybe a salad?”

Chris smiled. “They’ll probably have those.”

The restaurant was pretty busy when they got there, full of expo people who had arrived and wanted convenient food. “We can go somewhere else,” Ryan suggested when they were told there would be a bit of a wait. He didn’t want Chris to go any longer without eating.

“Only if you want to,” Chris said. “I don’t mind waiting a little bit.”

Ryan made an unhappy noise.

“I mean it,” Chris said, setting a gentle hand on his shoulder. “If I was really starving, I would have said something or suggested we eat earlier.
