It was for the best that Nikko had a reputation for being stone-cold and deadly serious on the eve of a mission. He caught Olivia’s scent a split second before she walked in the room and completely short-circuited his brain. He was grateful that Paris and Safira both liked to hear themselves talk, since their banter spared him the responsibility of stringing more than two coherent words together.

From the first moment he laid eyes on her, Nikko had thought Olivia was beautiful, even when she was too pale and streaked in the filth of the blood farm. She was beautiful the day she awoke in the hospital to assault him with medical equipment, and she was beautiful the first night she walked into Infinity with her head held high despite being terrified.

But tonight, she was something entirely different. Perhaps even without realizing it, she had painted herself a mask of such beauty that it would distract anyone who looked at her.

And despite being the most beautiful creature in existence, she looked shy. Even more surprising, her heart raced when she looked at him. The sweet smell of desire prickled at his senses.

When Paris started joking about him being naked for Olivia, he could have sworn the other Frenchman heard his thoughts. Given the opportunity, he would very much like to let Olivia make an informed decision on how she best liked him.

But that was a dream for another time. Tonight, he had to be razor sharp, not just for her, but for the other humans still held captive.

Once Karina finished checking that all their devices were transmitting to her computer, she excused herself. Safira and Phoebe followed her out, leaving only Paris and Julian with them.

Julian approached Olivia. Her dark-lined eyes rose to follow him. “Are you ready?” he asked.

“Honest answer?” she said, her voice shaky. “No. I’m not. But I can do it.”

“Good,” he said, drawing a small glass vial from his pocket. Olivia’s eyes followed it, her heart thumping. “This is an infusion from FLOW. I believe you drank some of these prior to feedings at the blood farm.”

“Yes,” she said quietly. “If it’s not absolutely necessary, I don’t want to be drugged. Please.”

Paris shook his head gently. “No drugs, cherie. Think of it like flavoring. Like what they put in the coffee at those overpriced chains. This will make your blood smell different so that anyone who may have encountered you before won’t recognize your scent.”

At that, she grabbed the vial and drained it, squeezing her eyes shut as she gulped it down. He admired her commitment, even when she was terrified.

Nikko glanced at his watch. “We’ll give it a few minutes to take effect, then head out,” he said.

Paris nodded and said, “I’ll be ready to follow you.” Julian followed him out, closing the door behind them.

Suddenly, the war room was too small. He couldn’t look anywhere that wasn’t filled with Olivia, wrapped in crimson like a night-blooming rose. “You look very lovely,” he managed.

Though the fear lingered in her eyes, she smiled.
