TRUTH

Time flew by like a wink. Raven knew not the exact time that had ticked by but from the bedside window view of the crescent moon hanging high in the stardusted sky, she knew that they had talked for hours. Tristan was mostly quiet the entire time as she recounted their past, save for a few mm-hmms in agreement and some questions so she could clarify or elaborate more. There wasn’t an inkling of recognition on his face despite the various stories she told him. But she knew he was giving her his full attention and listening to everything she said. Most importantly, he was trying his best to comprehend everything, even without those past memories. There were times when he seemed dazed, his eyes unfocused, as though he was remembering something. But he always denied it and steered the topic back.

“That’s why I kept searching for you. And here we are now.”

Tristan nodded his head and placed the now empty glass of red wine on the nightstand. The gasps of surprise and widened eyes that punctuated his face hours ago were no longer present. Instead, his face was now set in an emotionless mask, devoid of any clues that revealed what he was thinking.

“So, is there anything else you’d like to ask me?”

“It’s okay.”

“No, feel free to ask me anything. I’ll answer them all.” Raven drew the blanket away and turned to face Tristan, her feet touching the cool floor.

Tristan stilled. His eyes flitting to her knees which were mere inches from his. Then, he shifted in the chair, his legs moving away.

Raven leaned forward. Her eyes glinting with anticipation. Her face eager.

And Tristan stood up. “Let’s call it a day. You should head back.”

Raven stood up too and took a step towards him. Tristan immediately stepped back. She frowned then took another step forward. And he took another step back. She tilted her head up. His eyes that were emotionless moments ago now wavered. It was then that realization dawned on Raven. He was afraid of her. Of what she represented. The truth.

Because if he accepted everything she said, everything he knew about himself, everything he’d done, everyone he knew, they would all shatter in an instant.

Thousands of shards flew through the air. Sharp jagged slivers of broken glass. The windows shattered behind Raven. She instinctively hunched her shoulders but the raining shards fell like wicked snowflakes upon her, leaving a trail of bleeding cuts. Raven winced as splinters of glass nicked her shirt, cutting through the fabric and embedding in her skin. She spun around. Her dagger coalescing from the blood that poured out of her palm.

Numerous shadows darted through the gaping hole that was once a smooth pane of glass. They surrounded her on all sides, lining along the four walls. Fangs bared. Claws extended. Vampires.

“So you’re really here, hunter.” One of them spoke. A man in a crisp black suit standing right in front of the broken window. There was a familiar ring in his voice that took Raven back to the evening of the masquerade ball.
