1. Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?

Jesus did not call this woman by name when He asked this question, because He wasn’t really asking. I doubt He was so absorbed in what He was writing that He didn’t see all the religious ones walking away; He knew where they were, and He knew they ‘d condemned her to death. I believe He used these questions to let her know He was there to defend her. He was taking up her case.

The God who embraces the gutter is the God who defends the people who dwell there. As He wraps His arms around the hurting, broken, and dejected, those in opposition have to leave. The accusers couldn’t carry on with their accusations, and they certainly couldn’t have carried out the punishment---they would only have exposed their own mess. Their own pride, arrogance, and fear of exposure sent them running.
