The results were mixed.

Despite all the interference from buried sewer and utility lines, an area of disturbed response was detected at Newblock Park that, Bob Brooks and University of Oklahoma geophysicist Alan Witten later wrote, “might represent the walls of a shallow excavation (or pit).” At Rolling Oaks, another area of disturbed soil, measuring approximately twenty feet by nine feet, was picked up by the ground-penetrating radar that, Brooks and Witten wrote could, “potentially represent a pit such as one might find with a mass grave.” The language was couched in uncertainty, but the possibility of riot victims being buried in both locations was alive and well.

It was the data from Oaklawn, however, that proved to be the most surprising. With some exceptions, practically the entire African American section of the potter’s field, and especially the long-suspicious southwest corner, revealed nothing that resembled any kind of a trench or pit, or even, say, a series of contiguous individual graves that might fit with the one hundred or so graves described by Walter White. There were, however, some exceptions.

“We found a couple of locations,” Bob Brooks told a reporter for the Tulsa World, “that are interesting in terms that there is something there. At this point we can’t say exactly what.” Moreover, an anomaly was discovered near where Clyde Eddy had indicated that he saw the trench and the large wooden crates with the bodies inside. Nothing was definitive, but so far, the oral traditions, the testimony by Elwood Lett and the others, as well as the written documents that Dick Warner had unearthed were holding up. While we weren’t there yet, there was every reason to believe that the search for the dead of the 1921 Tulsa riot was on the verge of entering new territory. The next step, it seemed, would be to start digging.
