CHAPTER THIRTEEN

HE WAS A MESS.

Niko stared at his image in the mirror. Wow! His hair was unruly and his beard—well, he had one now. He’d never been anything but clean shaven in his life. And his eyes were bloodshot. No wonder Sofia had been giving him strange looks off and on this week.

He had been pushing himself hard—real hard. He’d been so eager to prove himself to everyone—most of all himself—that he could step into his grandfather’s shoes at the helm of the Stravos Trust. In the process, he hadn’t noticed the unhappiness he’d been inflicting on everyone—including himself.

He scratched at his beard. Between watching over Sofia and keeping up with the office via videoconferencing and emails, he hadn’t had two minutes to call his own this past week. He reached for his razor. This mess was going to take a bit of time to tame, but he wanted to look good for Sofia.

He’d noticed how she’d perked up when he mentioned getting her out of the hotel. He couldn’t blame her. They were visiting a tropical paradise, but instead of sightseeing and lounging about on the beach, they’d been huddled away in this suite working.

Sofia deserved to get out and enjoy some of Hawaii. And now that he’d finally completed his long-range business plan and had submitted it to his advisory board, he could afford to take a break.

Oh, who was he kidding? The thing bothering him was how Sofia pushed to get a move on their trip. Was she that anxious for their time together to be over? Once they reached New York, her home, he had a feeling he’d lose any chance to win her over. His hands moved faster, trying to eradicate himself of the bushy growth covering his jaw and upper lip.

He’d enjoyed this past week. Not the part where he’d been worried about Sofia and the baby, but the part of being there for her. No one had ever needed him before. His grandfather had been a solitary man who prided himself on his independence. Having someone rely on him in a personal way was new to Niko, and he liked it—he liked Sofia. She was very strong and determined, more so than he’d ever imagined. He respected that about her.

Time was ticking. And this time he wasn’t contemplating a business deal. This time it was something so much more important. Sooner rather than later he needed to propose his idea of them getting married. But how would she react?

He rushed through the shower and soon appeared in the living room to find that Sofia had changed into a summer dress. It had a white bodice with some blue flowers on it and a dark blue skirt. It was loose fitting, obscuring her figure. He liked the way she looked. She was perfect, with curves in all the right places.

“Is there something wrong with what I’m wearing?” She smoothed a hand down over the skirt as though straightening a nonexistent wrinkle.

“Um, no. Not at all.
