“That’s weird,” said Mike. “Is this the card you picked?”

Will’s eyes bulged out. “Weird? That’s amazing!” he told Mike.

The other kids crowded around. “How did you do that?” they all said at once. “Can you show us?”

All eyes in the class were on him again. But this time, it was for a better reason.

Nora was waiting for Mike at their meet-up place after school.

“Where were you?” she asked.

“Just running late,” he said. Or maybe lingering till he was sure that Jackson had already left.

Nora’s mom would worry if they didn’t get home quickly. “So, what happened at the museum? Did you see that Jackson and Tyler had to leave early?” she asked, beginning to walk.

It was embarrassing to tell other kids when he he got picked on. Today though, Mike had the upper hand.

“Tyler cut in front of me in line for the computer, and started playing video games! And then Jackson made fun of my family. But I got him to shut up, for once,” Mike said.

“No way!” said Nora. “Good going!”

“Yeah, I told him I didn’t need to use the computer anyway. I already have plenty of stuff to put on my family tree. I found out I’m related to Harry Houdini!” It felt truer every time Mike said it.

Nora stopped. “You’re related to Harry Houdini? Really?!”

“Yeah,” Mike said modestly. “My grandma told me all about it.” More or less.
