CHAPTER 6

The Burdens of My Heart Rolled Away

It was early 2004 when God placed another idea in our hearts about the things we were to do at Ffald-y-Brenin. One day, as I prayed, God gave me a vision of a cross that we were to erect on the land. The details were very clear and specific. There was a particular spot in the grounds where it should be placed, it was to be eight feet tall and four feet wide and was to face over the valley at a certain angle. We had a strong sense that this was very important. My nonconformist beliefs quickly swam to the surface and reminded me that it was only wood in a symbolic shape, but I felt it was a clear mandate from God, so I determined to go ahead.

In due course I met with our groundsman, and we went to the spot where the cross was to be placed. He was adamant it couldn’t go there, as the ground was too rocky, and wandered off to find a place where there was enough topsoil to help anchor it. I dug my heels in and insisted it had to go where I suggested.

This provoked him to go and get some tools to prove to me the folly of my idea. He returned with a screwdriver and a very long blade. The hole needed to be as deep as the blade to support the cross. I tapped the spot with my foot and he thrust the screwdriver into what he thought was solid rock.

It plunged in up to the handle. His mouth literally fell open. He looked up at me and then he eased the screwdriver out. It brought out a solid cone of rock and we had a ready-made hole. We had a spare post-holder, so he went and found it and placed it in the hole, ready to be cemented in. We clarified the angle it was to be at, and soon we were ready for the next stage.

Over the hills from Ffald-y-Brenin was a wonderful shop. It’s moved now, but it was like those stores you see in Wild West films where you can buy beans or bread but also get all the nails and wire and tools you need. I sent our groundsman there to get two pieces of treated outdoor timber. One had to be eight feet long, the other was to be four feet long. We also needed four nuts and bolts and washers to hold it all together

He returned looking pale and visibly trembling. I sat him down, and he explained what had happened. He had spoken to the shop owner, Gordon, and told him that he wanted some outdoor timber. Gordon was apologetic, saying that the normal delivery hadn’t arrived and a local builder had taken just about every bit of wood in the place … except for a piece eight feet long and a four-foot-long remnant.

It was a day of small but significant miracles. I reassured my shaking groundsman that God was at work and it was okay.
