If mullein flower oil is not available, you can use infused oil of St. J’s wort. (This is what I call St. John’s wort. That plant is sometimes called St. Joan’s wort, which makes students wonder if it is two different plants. “St. J’s” is my solution to the confusion. It is all the same plant, Hypericum perforatum). This oil or evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) can be used for ear pain.
I particularly love mullein flowers, not only for earaches and lung challenges, but also for the nervous system. I find tincture of mullein blossoms to be a reliable relaxant and soother of nervous tension. When you are jumping from one thing to another (in Ayurveda this is called having too much vata, or wind, in your system), and you are anxious about everything but nothing you can put your finger on, mullein flowers are indicated. When I went through menopause and often felt irritably hot and cranky, I found mullein flower tincture invaluable. (My mate was quite pleased with me taking it, too!) When it wasn’t mullein flower tincture that I wanted, it was evening primrose. Sometimes I mixed them together, which was lovely too. (See more menopause recipes, this page.)
I love mullein flowers for inflamed sinuses, both as an internal tincture and as infused oil for external use. I recommend taking the oil with you when traveling by plane, or for a long train or bus ride, especially if you wear contact lenses; but all of us are prone to dry and potentially irritated nasal passages when we have to sit for a length of time in artificial, recirculated air. Come to think of it, with more and more office buildings being built without windows, you may want to take the mullein flower oil to work, too. You can put the oil in your nostrils with a Q-tip, a tissue, or your pinky. Massage the oil externally over your sinuses, too, above your eyebrows and just above your cheekbones out to your ears. It’s also very useful if you live at a high altitude with a dry climate.
As I said earlier, breath and heart are inextricably linked. A nurse and herbalist named Mary who was my apprentice called me from the hospital one afternoon. Her elderly aunt was suffering from congestive heart failure and taking oxygen. My student called to ask if there was anything she could give her aunt to make her more comfortable. I said it was unlikely to help much in such a dire situation, but I suggested mullein to help with the excess fluid that was collecting within and outside of her lungs (characteristic symptoms of congestive heart failure). It may sound as if I’m making this up, but after she drank a cup of mullein tea the woman took off her oxygen mask, flung it across the room, and said she felt the best she’d felt in ages. My student called me back, ecstatic. I told her it couldn’t hurt to start her
