The baby’s bedtime routine and daytime naps

When my daughter was a few months old, I started to crave some time alone – and with my husband, so I started a bedtime routine: bath, milk, bed. She soon understood that after the bath, she’d be settling down for a feed and then heading into her Moses basket. Some nights, she’d only stay asleep a couple of hours, others a little longer. But I began to have at least the early part of the evening to myself. So when my son was born, we started this same routine at around the four-week mark. The first night, he slept an hour then needed another feed. But the next night, he slept maybe two hours. Soon he was having a good stretch of sleep between 7 p.m. and midnight.

As I said earlier, babies love the familiarity of routines. And once they’re able to tell that it’s bedtime and now they’ll be having a good kip before waking for the first night-feed, you can potentially spend this time doing some brainstorming or planning, connecting with people on Instagram, retweeting on Twitter. Anything that feels doable in your probably quite tired state. Or just kick back and watch a good BBC drama and start the evening work when they’re a little bit older. Either way, establishing this bedtime routine will free you up if you’re hankering after some alone time in the evenings.
