Chapter Twelve

Hunter froze. Silas dropped into a crouch. Lily bent down to scoop Henry up and hold him to her chest.

“Mason,” she said, and there was something sharp in it, a warning that Mason ignored completely. “What do you want?”

“Just a little privacy with our friend here. You should probably get your pup back to camp,” he added, smiling in a way Hunter didn’t like at all.

Lily didn’t budge an inch. “I don’t think I will.”

Hunter cleared his throat. “After last night, I don’t really have much to say to you.”

Mason laughed, propping his fists on his hips. By day he was somehow worse than he’d been the night before, more real and more terrifying for it. Hunter found everything about him repellant—the ungroomed hair on his face, the way his plaid shirt was tucked into his jeans, the burr of his laugh as rough as the growl of a chainsaw. All of it grated on Hunter’s nerves. This was an alpha, but not his alpha. This one was all wrong.

The ball of emotions that was Kurt twitched in his chest, and Hunter tried very hard to keep his breathing even, not wanting to give away anything at all. From what Kurt had said last night, Hunter felt sure that Kurt would fight Mason, given half a chance. He didn’t want that. A fight over him? Worst case scenario.

“That was a joke, buddy,” Mason said. Hunter didn’t believe him, and the rueful way that Mason shook his head seemed calculated and fake. “Just a misunderstanding.”

“You roofied me with devil punch,” Hunter said. “I don’t think that’s funny.”

“Oh, so you’re gonna be precious about it.” Mason sighed, reaching up to thumb his lip, still watching Hunter. “Humans, always delicate about things. No sense of humor.” Hunter held his ground, didn’t look away and didn’t respond. Mason sighed, rocking back on his heels. “So you’re gonna be like that? C’mon, man. Can’t you take a joke? Or are you gonna hold it against me forever?”

“Are you asking me to forgive you?” Hunter couldn’t believe it. “You haven’t even apologized.”

Mason grinned, clasping his hands together and holding them to his chest. “I’m sorry,” he said, and Hunter didn’t believe him for a second. “Won’t happen again. Can we be friends now?”

Lily made a low sound in her throat—when Hunter glanced at her, she shook her head, very slightly. “Yeah, no.” Hunter tried to sound a lot calmer than he was. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Really?”

Mason took a step forward, and suddenly Silas was between them, his whole body bristling with nervous tension. He held up a hand. “Don’t come any closer.”

But Mason towered over him, not intimidated in the slightest. He smirked. “Get out of my way.”

Silas didn’t move. Mason’s smirk turned sharp and then, almost too fast to see, he was in Silas’ face, half wolfed out and snarling so loud it set all the hair on Hunter’s body quivering.

Silas flinched, but he lifted his chin. “Stop,” he said.

Mason just sneered, and then there was motion too fast for Hunter to catch.
