Chapter 8
Mazi pulled herself away from her work and swiped her hand across her slozel desk. Her schedule shimmered brightly. The images and text confirmed what she was dreading. Today was a tour day, every couple of months or so, government officials and their family thought it would be a good idea to visit the compound. Just then her PIS beeped. “They’re here.” She grabbed a hair fastener, raked her curly hair up into a ponytail and strolled toward the entrance.
Mazi recognized everyone from reviewing their information. There was Victaz, who held a high ranking position in the government, his daughter, Petra, his wife, Czalt and Tweena, a URO. Except for Tweena who had leathery brown skin, they all were as white as egg whites, signifying years of staying indoors and being protected from the blistering sunrays by their expensive clothing.
Everybody except for Tweena wore white jumpsuits, head coverings and eye gear all specially made to stave off the heat and rays from the fireball sun. The jumpsuit was made out of the wildly popular microscopic organisms fabric that adjusted to the weather, and the sunglasses blocked the sun’s scorching rays, so much so that wearers could look directly into the sun without causing any retina damage.
The entire outfit was free to the wealthy and members of government. Some protectors and scientists were lucky enough to be allowed to purchase the items; however, at a discounted price. Unfortunately, the only way a Blug could get one was from the black market and they didn’t come cheap. The entire ensemble that Petra had on cost more than one Blug family made in a year.
They pulled off their hats and eye gear then handed them all to Tweena, who took the items with a smile before placing everything in a carry all for safekeeping.
“Hi all, welcome. I’m Creator Mazi and I’ll be giving you a tour of The Facility, you’re going to be exposed to some sights that will leave you breathless. Questions are welcome,” she said brightly.
“Oh, I have one,” Petra quipped.
“Great. What is it?”
“Why the hell am I here?” she asked sullenly; her mother gasped, her father grabbed her hand and squeezed it until Petra grimaced.
“You’re here, because I said that you had to be here. Do you understand?” Victaz hissed.
Petra nodded. “Yes sir,” she replied woodenly.
“Good. Now listen to the Creator and learn.” He nodded benevolently at her. “Please carry on.”
It took Mazi a few seconds to regroup after Petra’s and Victaz’s exchange. She led them through the corridors, they passed several classrooms, suites and recreational areas. They stopped at the sanitizer. “We’re going to stop at the Emancipation Room first so that you can get an idea of how it all begins. But first you’ll need to be sanitized. Please step inside.”
Petra ran her hand over her perfectly coiffed white blonde hair. “This better not destroy my hair,” she muttered and before Mazi could offer her a head covering she stepped in. Mazi was grateful when the door slid close.
