CROWN OF THORNS

Alia

Alia rushed into the blessedly empty restroom. She threw herself into the nearest stall before letting go the contents of her stomach into the toilet. Her lip curled, disgusted with herself as tears welled in her eyes. Why now? All she had to do was make it through the night. One night. What would Kaine think of her? What would Eric think?

The bathroom door opened and closed again. Heels echoed off the stone tile as the person made their way to the sink. A swift pang of embarrassment hit Alia as she wiped her mouth with toilet paper. Thank God they hadn’t walked in any earlier. She flushed with her foot and checked the dress to ensure there were no sickly remnants left behind. Alia hoped the dress was a gift, but if Eric wanted it back, she was going to return it exactly as she got it.

When she opened the stall door, there was Ana. Stone-faced and stunning, she carefully reapplied makeup in the mirror. As soon as they locked eyes, Ana’s expression dropped.

“Predictable,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Too much free alcohol, sweetheart?”

Alia cleared her throat and crept up to the sink. “No, and I’ll be fine,” she squeaked.

“You shouldn’t have come here.” Ana barely glanced over at Alia’s reflection as she washed her hands. She was mindful not to get the dress wet on the already dripping counter. “He shouldn’t have brought you.” Ana snapped the lid back on the lipstick and put it into her Chanel clutch.

Alia swallowed hard against the second wave. If she was going to have any kind of relationship with Eric, this thing with Ana would have to be settled. Alia took a breath. “What is your problem?”

“Honestly?” Ana turned to face her; her mouth opening and closing as if she wanted to say something. She paused and looked around at the empty bathroom before her mouth opened again.

“You really don’t like me with Eric, do you?” Alia cut her off. Her words did not reflect the storm brewing in her mind. What was she thinking? Scared of arguing with a vampire and of losing her job, she wanted to run as far away as possible. An image of Eric’s smile appeared, and the words tumbled out. “Why don’t you just say it already?”

“You know what? Whatever. My problem is you.”

“What did I ever do?” Alia squared her shoulders, ready for the barrage of baseless insults. Again, this wasn’t new.

“It’s what you will do; what your kind always does.”

“My kind? You mean… witches, right?” Woman, Black, and now witch. Yet another reason for someone to hate her unjustly. She secretly wondered if Ana was using her being a witch as a front for other underlying issues.

“Yes, witches.” Ana ran her gaze over Alia in the mirror. “Especially your kind. Your kind ruin families and get people killed.”

She was one to talk. “Aren’t you the one hosting this ‘commingling party’ as you called it?” Alia shook her head.

Ana rolled her eyes.

“I didn’t even know I was a witch until I met Eric.
