Ava stayed behind with Avril. She had made some excuse that Venus and I were accompanying my brothers on some Silver Lake business. Ava spun a fairly believable story about Garnet River being interested in establishing a camping and hiking lodge, and Venus was tagging along since her brother was in charge of parks and recreation in Jade Hills.

The Turtle Mountains had plenty of camping and fishing choices, and while Avril was familiar with the area, the two towns were a little farther north, pushing into the border, she didn’t know them as well. Nor had she ever been to Garnet River.

Since Ava wasn’t accompanying us, Avril was happy to hang out with her.

Venus rode in the back seat of Deacon’s pickup with me. She’d given me a little smile when we picked her up but didn’t give me any other sign that she had dwelled on our evening together like I had. My dick was in the various states of erect, depending on whether I was thinking of Venus. I had tried jacking off in the shower. Four times and I had still barely gotten a decent night of sleep.

Deacon drove the familiar route that Steel and I had taken to Garnet River. He turned down Main Street, a run-down stretch little longer than three blocks. There couldn’t have been more than six inhabitable buildings. The rest were in various states of demolition, unless its neglect had caused several structures to collapse in on themselves. Demolishing these buildings and cleaning out the lots must’ve required more resources than Garnet River could spare.

“Is that their city hall?” Venus leaned toward the middle in order to peer out the windshield.

I did the same just to be closer to her. Her sweet white chocolate scent caused a rush of blood back to my groin, but I didn’t pull away. I was going to take what I could get.

Next to a giant rubble of brick was an old two-story building. Unlike its neighbor, the place was made of wood and had an old-time saloon look to it.

“It’s the only building they seem to have put some effort into,” Deacon replied.

Prickles erupted over my body. In unison, we all scanned the surrounding area. We were being watched, and not in the open, like when Steel and I had gone through earlier.

A few beat-up old cars and rusted-out farm trucks lined the street on either side. Across from what we thought was city hall was a narrow diner. Up ahead one block, a gas station with two simple pumps sat alone.

“I almost feel bad for them,” Venus murmured. “Jade Hills wasn’t the easiest place to grow up, but we were better off than this.”

The muscles in Deacon’s jaw flexed as his grim gaze took in the dilapidated buildings around us. “The state of Garnet River has been ignored too long. I know I haven’t been out here since I took over, but if I had heard reports about how bad it was, I’d like to think that I would’ve made it a priority.
