Conley

She hadn’t run when he’d showed her his collection. No matter how hard Conley tried, his dragon loved to collect trinkets. At least he hadn’t shown her the room filled with baby trolls. Fake ones. His dragon, at the time, had wanted to collect a few real trolls, and that was where he’d drawn the line.

“Let’s go sit on the couch, and I’ll start a fire.”

Once they stepped out of the gnome room, he shut the door and led her back down the hall. Conley sat down on the sectional and pulled Nyx into his arms. Using the remote, he lit the fire and held his future mate close.

“I don’t like you putting yourself in danger tomorrow,” Conley muttered as he ran his hand up and down her arm. The operation was supposed to go off first thing in the morning, and Nyx would be on her own for probably close to an hour.

“So you’ve said,” Nyx mumbled. “I think about forty-seven times so far.”

He frowned. “I wish you’d let me claim you first. I could give you powers, a touch of immortality.”

“Immortality means I don’t die from natural causes. I think we all know none of this is natural,” she reminded him.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Then at least let me hold you all night,” he begged.

For a couple of hours, they talked about growing up. She wanted to know everything he’d witnessed over the years. He listened as she told him about her childhood. His heart broke as he heard how much they had to move to stay safe, and in the end, it hadn’t worked. Someone had still killed her mom.

She fell asleep in his arms. Everything felt perfect. While she slept, he held her close and studied every bit of her. She had long, lovely fingers. She kept her nails short and polished. He liked that. She had a graceful jawline and a long, delicate neck. Her hair smelled like flowers. He squeezed her a little too tightly, and she winced.

“Gently,” she mumbled. “And you wonder why I don’t want to be claimed by a dragon.”

He was silent a moment as he processed what she’d said. “Are you afraid of me, of my dragon?” he asked quietly.

She shook her head. “How could I ever be afraid of you, of any part of you?”

Somehow, he felt better. Somehow, he was beginning to believe that they genuinely would be together. After they caught Gideon, he might just get to claim her. And if he didn’t, he would be empty forever. He tried not to think about that possibility. When he did, he became completely paralyzed with fear. “We need to head back,” he whispered.

She nodded and stood up and stretched. When she raised her arms above her head, he caught a glimpse of her flat stomach and wanted to run kisses along it. Instead, he stayed in his spot until she was ready.

The flight back to the house was quick. His dragon loved the feel of having his mate close as they flew through the night sky.
