Chapter Thirteen

Rhyol knew that time moved differently between the Veil and the human world. For him, he'd only been gone half a day. That included the time it took him to dispense with the policeman, who had been no match for him even in his weakened condition. As well as the time it took for him to disentangle himself from the mob of women that had cheered him as he went hand to hand with the men in blue, and then proceeded to pounce on him to take him as their captive.

Throughout all of it, Morrigan had been little help. Other than to advise him to duck right from that woman's embrace and dodge left from that woman's grab at his manhood.

Once on the other side of the Veil, Rhyol had raced through the valley and into the fae forests. He'd never been to Mari's home. But he didn't need a map to lead him to her. He simply opened his heart, and it drew him, like a magnet, to the one it belonged to.

But hours to him had been days to her. Rhyol swore he could see new frown lines on her face. Her hair had grown a millimeter. There was a new freckle on her cheek that hadn't been there that last time he'd seen her.

For years, he'd spent his days watching her. Watching over her. Staring at her with a quiet intensity. Gazing at her with unfettered longing.

The object of his affection reached a hand up to his face. Mari's fingers hesitated a breath away from his cheek. Rhyol pushed his face into her hand, nose first. He only just barely stopped himself from licking her palm.

"It is you," she repeated.

It was him. He was back in full control of his body. He had full rein of his mind.

It was him. It was her. It was them. They were together again.

Mari's thumb brushed Rhyol's upper lip. A low growl emitted from him. It was the dragon's growl. The beast peeled open an eyelid, and its nostrils twitched at the scent of her, but it didn't press against Rhyol's control. The two halves of himself wanted the same thing. They both knew that only the man could get it for them.

The last time he'd stood in front of Mari with his beast in control, she had run from him. Now she pressed closer to him. Even if the dragon could mount a coup in its weakened state, it would not fight him in this moment. Not when it wanted to bury itself in her scent, in her skin, in her very being.

"It's you," she said again, as though she couldn't make herself believe the words.

Rhyol brought a hand to her waist, then instantly snatched it back. A different beast raised its head. This beast wasn't inside Rhyol. It dwelled below.

He'd seen Mari come out of the glass doors. He'd watched her move from the bright candlelight inside the house and into the soft moonlight. All the while Rhyol's gaze had been on her face, drinking in that sky blue gaze.
