Chapter 15

Baz

The streets streaked past in blurry smears. Tires squealed as the car screeched into an empty parking lot, spun in a wide circle, then shot back out onto the main road. Baz laughed like a maniac and stomped on the pedal until it touched metal.

Ava clung to her seat, her eyes going round as the engine roared. It almost looked like she’d never done a donut before.

If it had been anyone else, he’d have kept chasing the adrenaline high, but this was her night. Baz eased up on the accelerator and settled to a cruising pace. Seconds later, they came to a junction, and a cop car whizzed past.

“My lucky charm,” he said, reaching over to ruffle Ava’s hair. “Alright, let’s take a break.”

The Veyron purred onto a quiet street, then pulled into a parking space on the side of the road. He killed the ignition, then glanced over at his passenger.

With a laugh, Ava flopped her head back on the seat and panted with adrenaline. “Why even have a car like this if you can fly?”

The dim light concealed the finer details of her face, but a healthy flush darkened her cheeks, and her chest heaved as she giggled.

She took his breath away.

Baz switched off the headlights to stop himself from staring. “I own lots of things just to prove I can. I guess this is one of them.”

With a click, Ava unbuckled the seatbelt. She kicked off her shoes, then curled up like a cat with her feet tucked under her. “Ooh, I’m sensing some history. Ready to tell me how you became king of Seattle?”

Baz held out his hand. Almost shyly, Ava took it, then scooted onto his lap. As soon as her soft body settled against him, all the tension drained from his shoulders. Baz let out a deep breath and relaxed into his seat.

All his money, all his power, and the only place he wanted to be was right here. He was a goner, wasn’t he?

Unable to help himself, he played with the ends of her hair, then slid his fingers against the nape of her neck. “It’s… not a very glamorous story.”

Ava rested her head in the hollow of his collarbone, and the image of the golden thread appeared. This time, his dragon didn’t thrash with impatience. Longing radiated through the vision as it watched her dark eyelashes flutter against her cheeks.

Baz felt a twinge of sympathy for the beast. It never dwelled on moral duty, or the needs of others—it only followed its instincts. No matter what Baz’s reasons, all it wanted was its mate.

Baz searched for the right words. Not a lot of humans could understand this story, though perhaps Ava would. “The gender gap gets worse with every generation, but females were still scarce when my mom was alive,” he finally said. One measly sentence, but it triggered a pang of sorrow. “Deep down, most of the drakes don’t mean any harm, but… Well, they get desperate. Dragons live for a long time, so most of us have, like, twenty brothers, but my mom’s body couldn’t handle that.
