Dr. Smith
The rest of the teenage choir came in at around 9:20. They were on the stage practicing the songs that we were going to perform during the service. I was sitting in one of the front seats, watching them. After our confrontation, Mariah was super quiet. I guessed I knocked, or pushed, her back into reality. She is not Beyoncé!
As I sat there, I looked around and saw Dr. Smith walking towards me. He has the coolest walk ever! He walks with so much confidence and swag. As I said, that’s so sexy to me. Plus, his outfit was really nice. He had on a tan Armani suit with a purple tie and matching tan alligator shoes.
“What’s up, Dr. Smith?” I said with a warm smile as he sat in the seat beside me.
“I’m good, Aaliyah. But the real question is, what’s up with you? Mr. White told me what happened in the parking lot between you and Mariah. What’s going on?”
“I’ve gotten fed up with how Mariah and the other people at this church treat Allison and her family just because they’re white. They deserve to be treated as equal as we treat each other!”
Dr. Smith looked surprised. “Really? So you feel that because of the Pivot’s race, they get mistreated?”
“Dr. Smith, I know that’s why. Mariah even told Allison that she didn’t belong here in a black church during practice yesterday. I’m not trying to be a snitch or anything, but Allison is like a sister to me and I didn’t like her basically being bullied. She’s been going through a lot over the past few months with one of her close loved ones passing away.”
“Aaliyah, don’t feel like you’re a ‘snitch’. I appreciate you telling me about this problem and I’ll do my best to eradicate it and address it in the coming weeks. As I’ve said countless times, this is a church for anybody, no matter how different they may be.Discrimination isn’t tolerated in any way shape or fashion, and I’ll try to the best of my abilities to get to the bottom of it.”
This situation is the reason why Dr. Smith is by far the best preacher in Willowsfield, if not the whole south. Not only can he preach, but he actually cares about what goes on in his church and tries to make Mt. Zion the best church that he can.
After Mr. White was done reviewing the songs with us, Dr. Smith addressed the teenage choir.
“From reliable sources, I’ve heard that there have been some incidents where a group of you have mistreated and discriminated against a ‘different’ member in this choir. Because I want to be confidential, I won’t tell who told me this special privileged information or who’s involved in this problem, but hear what I’m about to say. Mt. Zion is a church for anybody no matter their political beliefs, sexual preferences, or race. You don’t know what’s going on in the members of this church’s life, so none of us in this room are in any position to judge.
