CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Attar might have appreciated Alex’s irrepressible stubbornness at any other time. Human beings were inevitably frustrating. Their free will led them to foolish ends. It was also the very thing he found most enticing about them, how in the face of the perilous, they pressed onward.

Right now, Alex’s refusal to see reason made Attar want to shake him. His hands fisted as he followed Bella’s uncle into the living room and tried once again to make him see reason. “Bella refuses to leave you. She’s almost died twice today. Unless you agree to allow me relocate you, she’ll continue to be in danger.” His hand jerked. The glass vial within the bomb shattered. Shards cut into his skin.

It was a damned nuisance, not having his protection in place. But if he kept it around him, he might miss feeling Bella’s touch against his skin.

“Attar!” With careful fingers, she plucked out the largest piece of glass. “I thought you couldn’t be hurt?”

He blinked the device and splinters elsewhere. “Healed already.” He held up his palm where the cut reknit.

“If you retrieve the bomb, forensic analysis could lead us to the perpetrator,” Alex ventured.

“The particular treasure hunter involved is irrelevant. I’m hunting the celestial behind this mess.”

“How unfortunate for the celestial in question,” Alex drawled.

Focusing on Bella, Attar wrapped his fingers around her more delicate ones. She was so fragile. It made his heart hurt to think of all the accidents and intentions that could befall her. “Choose any place in the world. It will be a vacation.”

The old man harumphed. “As I’ve said, Attar Etoile, the both of you are welcome to remain here with me. There’s plenty of room and a fierce doorman. Plus, you should suffice as protection.”

He could see Bella wavering so he pulled her closer and pressed his leg between hers. He wasn’t above using sex to convince her. She bit her lip as her lashes fluttered. “I’ll send you someplace decadent. How about Fiji? The waters are lovely. You’ll be able to sip fun drinks and eat mangoes in the waves.”

“You tempt like the devil,” she said softly.

“I never claimed to play fair.”

“I suppose it would be uncomfortable for you to seduce my niece under my own roof,” Alex drawled.

‘Uncle Alex!”

Attar snorted. Reprobate. “I assure you, if seduction was the goal, your presence wouldn’t hinder me in the least.”

Alex flapped his hand. “Nonetheless, we’ll remain here. I’ve been hated and attacked by more academics than I can count. I’ve survived cancer, heart failure, drugs, drink, and innumerable maladies, all of which tried to send me to the grave. One tiny bomb isn’t going to prod me from my bed. I’ve survived explosion too, as you see.”

“Thanks to me.”

“Exactly. I shall repeat for those whose incredible age have left them hard of hearing: you are more than welcome to stay.” Alex nodded again, as if the matter was settled, and toddled off toward the kitchen.

“He’s a stubborn old fool.”

“He is,” Bella agreed, her tone fond. “But I can’t leave him, not with murderers on the loose.
