Chapter 17

September 2004 (eight years later)…

“You better sing, Boy!” I yelled at Noah.

I could see the smile that had appeared on his face. He was so shy, just like me. I wasn’t shy when it came to him though. He was singing Running Back to You by Commissioned and was tearing that song up. Noah’s voice was a true gift from above, and he’d surpassed my singing abilities at only fifteen years old. When he was a baby, I sang to him constantly, even while he was in the womb, so it was no surprise to me that he possessed that gift. It was a surprise at just how gifted he was.

The past eight years had been good to me. I was the head pharmacist at Walgreens here in Baltimore and making good money. Noah was still extremely active in church. He was the musician for the youth choir, and he taught songs sometimes. He’d even written a song. Outside of church, he played baseball and was in the band. He was going out for drum major next school year. Noah made me extremely proud to be his mother. I sat on the pew and enjoyed the rest of his solo as Ryan smiled softly at me. I smiled back. He and I were great friends that talked about everything.

David and I were great friends as well. More like friends with benefits. We tried to see each other at least four times a year. He claimed that he still loved me, but I didn’t think I could ever marry him. I still loved him, no matter how hard I tried to fall out of love. Sleeping with him didn’t help, either. I did have needs though. I didn’t want to be the kind of woman that slept around. If I couldn’t sleep with David, then I wouldn’t sleep with anyone. It seemed I would never date, I was always at work.

I stood and clapped for my son, my world. His locs were to his shoulders now, and he’d kept them groomed like my mama requested of him. Noah reminded me so much of myself at his age. My parents seemed to be a little more lenient with him than they were with me though. I was sure that came from them being older and him being a boy. After church, Noah came to me and hugged me, then said, “Hey Ma.”

“Hey Baby. You sounded amazing!”

“Thanks Mama. We ought to do a duet one day,” he said with a smile.

“That would be nice Baby. Just let me know when.”

Noah and I tried to spend Sundays together. We were both pretty busy all the other days. We still made the time to talk every day. People always thought he was my little brother. It almost seemed that way, besides the fact that he called me mama. We talked about everything, even girls. He tried to act like he didn’t care, but I knew he had to be crushing on someone. I just hoped it wasn’t an older woman.
