Chapter Eight

The rest of the week went by with little fuss. Mollie usually found a reason to meet with Nuit at least once a day—whether to show him how to check the community mailbox (and listen to him complain about getting mailed addressed to the previous owners) or simply to summon Jackson home after playing with Ty all afternoon. No matter how many shadows were around Nuit, he always batted them away when she spoke to him, keeping his attention on her alone.

Having a pretty demon look at her was quite nice.

Where Mollie felt light and happy around their new neighbors, Jackson also appeared to be in equally good spirits. Every night over dinner, he had something new to babble about Ty. He had even built a new bakery out of a cardboard box so Ty could play Bakery Babies and was excited about giving it to him.

Before Mollie left work on Friday, she received a call from Miss Lorrae. Her heart pounded in her throat as she answered. Jackson’s next therapy session would be on Monday, so any problems could be addressed quickly, but…

But she didn’t want to learn about a new problem. Dammit. The week had been going so well.

“Hi, Mrs. Bennett,” Miss Lorrae’s sweet voice traveled through Mollie, making her head spin with anticipation. “I’m so sorry to bother you like this.”

“No, no, it’s okay.” Mollie shut down her laptop and started packing up her belongings. “How are you? What’s going on with Jackson? I’m sorry. There’s a problem, isn’t there? I can be there in twenty minutes if you’ll stop him from catching the bus.”

“Oh! No! Don’t panic!”

Huh?

Miss Lorrae laughed softly. “Actually, I just wanted to call you and tell you that Jackson had a really good week in class. He finished all his assignments on time, he got along with everyone, and he ate all of his lunches.”

“Really?” Tears pricked Mollie’s eyes. She swallowed hard. “That’s such a relief to hear.”

“Yes! I thought you should be informed of this and share it with the therapist. Jackson seems to be really happy ever since Ty transferred here.”

Gratitude swelled through Mollie for her new neighbors. “Yes, I agree. We live next door to the Damons, actually. The boys play together every day.”

“That’s so sweet. I hope they’re friends for a long time to come.”

Mollie smiled, wishing the same.

Once she arrived home, she checked her phone. Someone had texted her while she had been driving.

JACKSON IS HERE.

Mollie chuckled and tapped out her reply. Thanks for letting me know.

As soon as she sent it, she thought about one of Jackson’s requests—having Ty over for pizza. Tonight would be an excellent night for pizza. She had a few tasks to complete before a big meeting on Monday, but she could tend to it over the weekend.

And, well, maybe she wanted to know what it looked like when Nuit ate.

She squeezed her legs together, not wanting to imagine what it was like when he ate but, oh, well, it was too late.
