1/2 April 1916

This was a small but very costly raid by two Navy Zeppelins, in which twenty-two people were killed in Sunderland.

‘P’ type Navy Zeppelin L.11: Korvettenkapitan Viktor Schutze took off from Nordholz, crossed the coast at Seaham and went on to bomb Eppleton Colliery with two bombs, Hellon Downs with two bombs and Philadelphia with one bomb. He then flew to Sunderland, where he dropped 22 bombs, killing twenty-two people, with twenty-five seriously injured and 103 less seriously hurt, causing £25,568 worth of damage. We have limited information on the casualties in Sunderland, many of which occurred when a bomb hit a tram, where one of the people killed was the tram inspector. Two of the Sunderland victims were Harry Patrick (16) and Mary Patrick (18). Schutze dropped more bombs as he made for the coast: one at Port Clarence and two at Brotton. As he crossed the coast over the River Tees he dropped a final bomb, but missed his target of shipping.

‘P’ Type Navy Zeppelin L.17:. Kapitänleutnant Herbert Ehrlich took off from Nordholz and was first seen at dusk off the coast near Flamborough, where he waited for the dark. Ehrlich had engine problems, with a broken propeller on the aft engine, as he crossed the coast, and to maintain height while the mechanics made repairs he had to jettison bombs into the sea. He returned to Nordholz safely.
