Todd had had to stay after class and talk to his math teacher, so that by the time he entered the cafeteria on that Monday afternoon, the confrontation was over and the smoke had cleared. He saw Elizabeth sitting with Enid and he waved. Enid waved back. Elizabeth didn't see him. She seemed to be engrossed in something she was saying. Todd got his lunch and crossed the cafeteria to their table. "Hi," he said as he put down his tray. He leaned down to give Elizabeth a kiss on the cheek, expecting her to turn to him with a happy smile.
Elizabeth turned to him, but there was no happy smile on her lips. Her cheeks were pink. "Did you hear any of that?" she wanted to know. Todd noticed that her eyes were the color of a stormy sea.
"Excuse me?'" he asked politely. "Did I hear any of what?"
Enid grimaced. "Did you miss a scene!" she said. "It was like something in a movie."
Todd looked at Elizabeth. "I take it this movie wasn't a comedy," he joked.
"It was a farce," Elizabeth said. "That's what it was. A farce." She sighed deeply. "Oh, Todd, it was just awful!" Elizabeth explained the scene with Scott, Claire, and Jean in full detail.
"Can you believe it?" she fumed when she was done. "He just stood there with this arrogant smile on his face!" She shook her head as though she still couldn't completely believe it herself. "A competition to go out with Scott Trost!" she exploded. "Maybe now you'll agree with me that boys are more selfish and shallow than girls."
But Todd shook his head. "No, I don't. Look, from what you've told me, I'd have to agree that Scott behaved like a complete creep. But what about Claire and Jean?" he asked. "They went along with it, didn't they?"
"Only because he put them on the spot," Elizabeth said. But even as she was defending the girls' behavior to Todd, she couldn't figure Jean and Claire out. Why would two sensible, attractive girls fight over such a conceited jerk? It didn't make sense at all.
Lila sat down in the shade of an oak tree and looked around. "Where's Jean?" she asked. After the scene in the cafeteria, the girls had decided to eat outdoors.
Jessica sat down beside Cara. "She said she forgot something in her locker. She'll be right back."
Cara shook her head. "Poor thing," she sympathized. "Did you ever see anything like that in your entire life? Scott actually wants them to fight over him!" She wrenched her sandwich from its wrapper. "No wonder Jean's upset."
"She didn't seem upset to me," Jessica commented. "She looked a little surprised at first, but by the end, I thought she seemed to be pretty much in control."
"Anyway," Lila said authoritatively, "Jean has nothing to be upset about. She did the right thing." She brushed aside a fly. "To tell the truth, I really don't see what the fuss is all about. There's nothing wrong with a little competition.
