My heart hurt, but Killian and I couldn’t waste time. I straightened my dress, and he pulled up his pants and smoothed his shirt, but all the while we were side by side, touching and kissing every few seconds.

I finally took three steps back. “Okay, if we continue like that, I won’t be able to stop anymore, so … yeah.”

He smiled at me, so genuinely and so open, my heart squeezed. “That wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

No, it wouldn’t. “If I stay out for too long, Eldon and the others will come after me.”

Killian’s smile faded. “How were they treating you? Have they hurt you? Have they … hm, tried anything?”

I shook my head. “No, they haven’t. They are mean, they like to insult and threaten me, but they know they need me to complete the spell. It’s either me, or kidnapping Almae, which I don’t think they want so …”

“That’s … good. I guess.”

“They injected me with a potion, though, something unique that burns me from the inside when they willed it, which usually occurs when I defy them.”

Killian’s jaw tightened. “Is there a way to get rid of it?”

“As far as I know, it slowly fades from my system, so if they can’t give me more, it should go away.”

“Good. Now they will never have an opportunity to give it to you again.”

“What do you mean?”

He stared at me. “Wait. You’re coming with me, right? To DuMoir Castle?”

Oh. “No, I have to stay and—“

Killian cursed under his breath then stepped right in front of me. “Lavinia, you can’t go back with them. Now that you’re back to yourself, you can’t go back. Like you said, they can’t finish it without you or Almae. If you come with me, everything will be all right.”

“I see your point.” I reached over and adjusted his tie. “But if we think strategically, we could use this to our advantage. What other opportunity will you get to have a man on the inside? If I leave, then we lose access to the boxes they have.”

He grasped my shoulders and rested his forehead on mine. “I don’t like this.”

I closed my hands around his biceps, loving I could feel his muscles even through the shirt and jacket. “I know. I don’t either. Since I’ve woken up, I’ve been sick and worried. But so far, they haven’t noticed anything.” I pressed my lips before telling him, “Bates is helping me.”

“Bates?” He pulled back and looked at me. His eyes widened as he remembered. “He’s the one who loved Delia.”

“Apparently, he still does.” It was a beautiful, tragic love. I felt sorry for the both of them.

His eyes locked on mine, Killian cupped the nape of my neck with one hand. “I’m not sure I can let you walk away.”

A small smile tugged on my lips. “You’re the strongest man I know. I’m sure you can do it.” Though, it did delight me that he felt that way about me. Truth be told, it would be damn hard to walk away from him now.
