Chapter Sixteen

With a curse, Liam swerved out of the way and shoved another of the foul creatures, trying to shield me from them. I scrambled to the end of the bed, searching for anything I could use as a weapon.

“Tell my father to go to hell!” he cried.

They hissed and two of them grabbed his shoulders, piercing his skin. He let out a grunt of pain, but managed to swing at one, sending it stumbling back. Before I could blink, another of the creatures had grasped his wrists, razor sharp claws cutting ribbons into his shirt. I lunged to try to peel them off Liam, but a thin, high-pitched siren went off in my brain, and I tumbled from the bed, collapsing to the floor clutching my ears. My mind shattered from the sound. Not a wail, but a splitting, high-pitched whine that threatened to tear apart the fabric of my mind. My vision speckled with black dots, and then for a moment, or a lifetime, white light flooded behind my eyelids. I saw nothing except to stare into an endless pain that stretched on forever like a barren desert. Someone called my name, but when I opened my eyes again, the room was empty.

I stared at the ceiling, the horrible, stabbing pain receding with every deep inhale. When I managed to stumble to my feet again, I staggered to the door in search of Liam, but I lingered at the threshold. I had no idea where those creatures had taken him, and my rational side demanded I stay within his chamber and wait.

A terrible scream echoed through the castle, and it sounded like Liam’s voice, pleading and crying out for mercy. I bolted from the room in search of the sound. I had no plan, no idea how I might release him from those monstrous creatures, but I refused to linger in that room and wait for him to die. I had to try something. Anything.

My heart raced, my chest tightening with every step. I followed Liam’s cries to an opulent doorway, gilded in gold and lined with black onyx columns. The door stood ajar, and I took a deep, steadying breath before pushing it open. The Shadow Prince stood in front of a long window, his back to me, his long purple robes billowing across the floor.

“Hello, Catherine.”

The low sound of his voice sent a chill down my spine, and for a moment, I contemplated running out of the room and slamming the door behind me. But then I glanced at Liam chained and unconscious, his shirt in a tattered heap at his feet. The pale creatures surrounded him, their razor sharp claws digging into his skin. They snickered and laughed, flashing their sharp teeth.

“Liam!” I gasped, my hand pressing against my throat. I swallowed a wave of nausea, paralyzed by his wounded, prostrate form.

“Tell me,” the Prince said, turning around slowly. His eyes shimmered like two black mirrors, revealing a powerful and sinister force beneath. “What bargain did you make with my son?” he continued, folding his hands into his robes.
