Charlie is in the kitchen when I return, filling two glasses to the rim with red wine. He hands one to me. “I thought you might need this.”

“Me?” I laugh, taking my glass from him. “I mean, I totally do. But I can’t imagine your day was the portrait of normalcy.”

“Not entirely,” he agrees.

The cabin is quiet as we stand in the kitchen, sipping wine. The sun has finally set, leaving only a dusky light behind, just enough to distinguish the trees from the sky out of the window. I set down my glass and reach behind Charlie so I can plug in the twinkly lights strung above the kitchen cupboards. It’s not a subtle move, but he lets me make it, not forfeiting an inch when I lean toward him. His breath hitches in his throat as my hand brushes his arm. This close to him, the warmth of his body seeps into my skin and I breathe him in. He smells like pine and rain and wood smoke. I would bottle his scent if I could, bottle it and wear it every single day for the rest of my life. However long that might be.

His head bows toward me, his eyes following mine while I move away from him again. I’m staring into his eyes. I can’t stop, the brown of them swimming in a golden light. It’s like magic, the way they always seem lit up.

“I need to make dinner,” I try to say, but my throat spasms into a nervy gulp halfway through the sentence.

“What’s that?” There is a jittery amusement in Charlie’s voice.

I take a big step back and clear my throat. “I said, I need to make dinner.” Then I leave him in the kitchen to start a fire and go get the rabbits. When I return, he’s still standing against the counter, propped on his arms, staring at me, smiling.

“Can I help?” he asks.

“Are you sure?” I stare at his legs. He’s been standing on only one leg for quite a while. I can’t imagine it’s comfortable.

“Yeah. It actually feels good to be up.”

“All right, then, you can peel the potatoes.”

While Charlie peels, I braise the rabbit in white wine and whole grain mustard. I’ll serve it simply with herb-roasted potatoes, and I’ll make a grilled cheese special for Jack.
