Chapter 21

A knock at Sophie’s door broke her concentration as her appointment arrived for a reading. Lucy wandered in, dressed casually in a long red dress with strappy, flat gold sandals.

‘Lucy,’ Sophie said surprised and involuntarily smiled, but her friend did not look quite as happy to see her.

‘Hi Sophie, I’m your next reading.’

Sophie froze. ‘I can’t—’

‘I’ve pre-paid and consider me a client. Just give me the same reading you give to everyone else.’ Lucy moved towards the small table with two chairs. ‘Is this where you do the readings?’ she asked, and sat when Sophie nodded. She placed her handbag down on the ground beside her. Sophie stood from behind her desk.

‘Miss Sharpe wouldn’t have booked you in,’ Sophie said confused and with a glance to the entranceway hoping Miss Sharpe – who had left for the day and had gone to her Bridge game – might manifest.

‘She didn’t. I booked online and used my alias – Neroli Barker. But you can call me Lucy,’ she said, and smiled at her own joke.

‘I’ve missed you, Luce. You haven’t been returning my calls or messages,’ Sophie moved to the small table and sat opposite her.

‘I needed to cool down. You don’t have your glasses with you.’

Sophie sighed. ‘Why would you push me to do this? We’ve discussed it already.’

‘Because I know you can tell me what choice I made and what my future looks like. I know with you, it will be correct and I don’t want to make the wrong choice… I want to pick the man who will love me, be with me always and be loyal.’

‘I’m not sure I can see all that. All I can see is who you pick and if you stay together or not.’

‘If I ask the right questions you can,’ Lucy said. ‘You told me that yourself.’

Sophie conceded defeat. Disappointed but feeling trapped, she rose, got the glasses, returned, and sitting, slipped them on. ‘Go ahead then, ask me questions.’

Lucy nodded and asked immediately. ‘Will I marry Lukas?’

The images appeared around Lucy’s head and Sophie studied them. She saw the same things she saw that very first time she placed the glasses on and sat in the company of her friends Lucy and Blain. That time she had no idea of the power of the glasses, or what she was seeing. The images showed Lucy signing a wedding register in her bridal dress. She saw yet again, that she wasn’t at the wedding. The first time Sophie had seen this she couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t be part of her friend’s wedding when they were so close. Now she knew. She was going to lose Lucy and probably Lukas. She saw the ultimatum that Lucy had already delivered. Her eyes widened in surprise and she pulled the glasses off.

‘You asked Lukas to pick you or me? Why?’

‘How would you feel if your boyfriend was hanging around me all the time?’

‘Well, if you worked together – if he was a model or set dresser, or designer, photographer, hairdresser, whatever, I’d trust you both and understand.
