Despite the fact that at least half of the book consisted of reproductions of other people’s work, Cooper had the temerity to assert at the beginning of the volume that, “The ideas and conclusions expressed in this work are mine alone.”
One can still find Behold a Pale Horse in online as well as brick-and-mortar bookstores, and time has not dimmed the feeling, when handling the book, that one is in possession of information one should not have, as if it were a kind of conspiracist Necronomicon. Despite its hodgepodge, scrapbook-like nature - or perhaps because of it - it is a very impressive, important looking volume. The design rhetoric of the book evoked a feeling that one was in the process of acquiring some kind of transgressive knowledge. For some of us, there is a certain frisson that comes from seeing redacted, blacked out text in a government document. Regardless of the importance or significance of the words blacked out, the very fact that it was blacked out is exciting. One of the goofiest, but effective touches in the design was a footer which read:
* * * *T O P S E C R E T * * * *
It was at the bottom of each page. Of course, none of the information in the book was top secret (or any other kind of “secret”), but such touches made the reader feel special; we were members of an elite group who had stumbled across something we really shouldn’t have discovered. As a marketing ploy, even if an unintentional one, it was brilliant.
While Behold a Pale Horse offers a précis of Cooper’s views at the height of his BBS notoriety, the key document for understanding Cooper’s point of view at the end of his career (and his life) is simply called “MAJESTYTWELVE.” The name itself was quite clever. Cooper stated that this was the name of “a set of Top Secret documents” he saw while in the US Navy. Notice the similarity to MJ-12, which had by then become a ufological mainstay. Cooper’s mysterious document was close enough to generate a kind of mythic resonance but just different enough that he could maintain a position of being original and distinct from the pack.
MAJESTYTWELVE is a rollicking tale of how everything is seemingly connected to a shadowy group of elites who have existed since the dawn of recorded history. Their intentions, it goes without saying, are not in humanity’s best interest. Much of the text of this seminal 1997 document was familiar to those of us who had followed Cooper’s exploits to one degree or another over the years, particularly those of us who had read Behold a Pale Horse. But there was a new and shocking twist, summarized in this snippet:
For many years I sincerely believed that an extraterrestrial threat existed and that it was the most important driving force behind world events. I was wrong and for that I most deeply and humbly apologize. [58]
A recantation of this sort was almost unheard of amongst the ranks of the ufological subculture.
