Chapter Nineteen

I wished I could say tonight was a dark and stormy night. That would be fantastic, with thunder rattling the car windows and lightning casting the scenery in an eerie white glow when it streaked through the night sky. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. A full moon lit our February night and not a cloud in the sky. The night wasn’t even cold—well, not Reno cold, which was what I was used to for this time of year. I barely needed my black jacket, but I wore it anyway.

After our meeting, I spoke privately with Patty and William about my mental defenses, specifically my mental vault, while they enjoyed the hors d'oeuvre provided by Juliet. They both suggested that for the time being I solely focus on my mental barrier and leave the vault for latter, after I perfected my mental wall.

“What a great night,” I commented as I continued to watch out the window, the lights of buildings and houses passing us by.

“Beautiful.” Juliet kept her eyes focused on the road.

“I talked to Kirtus today; he doesn’t seem worried about tonight.” I sighed. “In fact, he seems kind of glad.”

“I doubt he will miss Sahin.” Juliet paused as her grip tightened on the steering wheel of the Ford. “Such a waste.”

“Yes, but with Sahin gone, and Kirtus in a greater position of power, this will force the Light and the Dark closer.” Amanda adjusted how she sat. “I never had issues with Sahin, but he’s no friend of Kirtus’s and barely tolerated any of the Light.” She leaned forward from the back seat for us to hear her better. “Who knows? Maybe this will help.”

“If only I saw the future more clearly.” I closed my eyes and focused again, but there wasn’t much of a point. My temples still ached from trying all afternoon. “I’ve tried to focus on the challenge, but all I get is a whole lot of fog and nothing else.” I rubbed the side of my head.

“You’ve only had this ability for less than six months.” Amanda patted my shoulder.

“My powers took me almost twenty years to fully control, and I’m still improving on them every day.” Juliet tapped the side of her head to emphasize the point. “These gifts are not something one can master in a few weeks.”

“But—”

“Years, Chris, years and years,” Juliet chided. “And I still get queasy, especially when I’m tired or I’ve overexerted myself.”

Instead of pushing the subject, I changed tactics. “What’s the deal with this location? Why’s Hick’s Road so important?”

Amanda laughed. “You mean to tell me, in all your research into the area for witches and local history, you never came across the legend of Hick’s Road?”

“No. Should I?” I shifted in the passenger seat to more easily see Amanda in the back.

“I assumed everyone in San Jose heard the legend.” She grinned at me.

“I’m not from here.”

“Oh, right.” Amanda tapped the side of her head and pretended to act surprised by my admission.

I shook my head.
