John Marsh, the first European American to settle the great Central Valley, selected the delta as his home (above). Marsh had seen all of the American frontiers, and he selected the area bordered on the west by Mount Diablo and on the north and east by the San Joaquin River as the site of his Rancho Los Meganos. He established many crops in the region that we take for granted today, including wheat and various orchard fruits, and introduced the practices of animal husbandry and viticulture. Marsh established California’s first inland port at Marsh Landing (below), located between what is now Antioch and Oakley, to allow the transport of grain and cattle to market.
