We were back at the new office, going through the rooms and trying to figure out which one would be used for what, what we needed to get to furnish the space to get started, what stock we needed to have on hand... all that sort of thing. Technically, the ink had only just dried on the lease, and we weren’t set to move in just yet—they still had to do something with the HVAC system, strip and polish the floors, and fix a few things Mason and Elsbeth had found on the last walk-through, but once that was done, we’d be able to move in. One I had the list finished, I was going to prioritize. The stuff we needed, and then the stuff that would be useful, and then the stuff that we just sort of wanted.

I was sizing up the kitchen, trying to decide what kind of coffee maker was most appropriate, when my phone rang. I set the clipboard on my lap and pulled out my phone.

“Hart, what’s up?”

“I have a few questions about our dead shrink.”

“I’m doing great, how about you?”

“Cut the shit, Campion. Dead shrink.”

I grinned, knowing he couldn’t see me. “Greer?”

“You got another dead shrink I don’t know about?”

“Nope. What do you need to know about Greer?”

“Run me through that shit about the Ordo thingy again.”

I did my best to remember everything Greer had said to me. “Did you need me to call him again?” I asked when I finished.

“Maybe. Did he say anything about either Harrod or Picton having ties to… the fuck is it called…?” I heard papers shuffling. “Tranquil Brook?”

It felt like my blood turned to ice. “Did you just say ‘Tranquil Brook’?”

“Yeah? So?”

I moved the phone away from my ear. “Mason, can you come in here?”

A few seconds later, my boyfriend appeared in the doorway, wiping dust on his jeans with a frown on his face. “What do you need?”

I hit the speaker button on my phone. “Hart, why did you ask about Tranquil Brook?” My eyes were on Mason’s face, so I saw his jaw clench and his eyes narrow.

“The fuck is going on, Campion?” the elf demanded.

“Because Tranquil Brook has come up recently for… something else, and I don’t believe in coincidences,” I answered. “What does it have to do with Greer?”

Mason’s eyebrows went up.

“He worked there,” came Hart’s voice from the phone. “The fuck else would I be asking? Did he say anything about how he knew Harrod or Picton?”

“Not specifically,” I answered. “He named them as the heads of the Antiquus Ordo Arcanum.”

“What about his job?”

“He didn’t say anything to me about his work at all.” If he had, you can bet I would have been all over it, since apparently he’d worked at Tranquil Brook, our number-one bet for where Rayn was institutionalized.

Hart grunted. “This Ordo thing, it’s not public, not a tax-paying organization.”

“I don’t think secret societies make a practice of paying taxes,” Mason pointed out, his tone mild.

“You an accountant, too, Doc?”

Mason’s lips twitched.
