CHAPTER 7

THE EASIEST BUSINESS TO START

Brad never screamed at me. I sat in a cubicle outside his office (and later in my own office, just down the hall) for years and heard an almost daily stream of shouting and expletives pour out through his doorway. Everyone got it sooner or later. Catch him at the wrong time, and you’d get your head bitten off. That I’d managed to avoid his wrath for so long was a source of pride for me.

I bring in a lot of money for the company. That must be why I’m safe.

Turned out it was just dumb luck that I survived as long as I did.

Twenty minutes ago I had asked the wrong question, and now I was getting my head ripped off.

I was sitting in a conference room with a dozen people, every one of them a vice president of the company—except for me. Brad had asked me for a sales projection for the coming year. I wasn’t sure if he meant a specific division or the company as a whole, so I asked him to clarify. Somehow this hit a nerve, and he let me have it.

I was shocked at his stamina. Every time I thought he was finished, he’d take a deep breath and start all over again. Twenty minutes in, and he showed no signs of slowing. Veins tensed in his neck and forehead as he continued to scream insults at me.

I couldn’t believe it.

I knew everyone else in the office had gotten similar treatment at one point or another, but I figured if I worked hard and put up good numbers I’d never be on the receiving end of a Brad Beratement.

I looked around the room trying to find help, but everyone’s eyes were down, pretending not to notice the meeting had turned into an execution. They’d all been here before. They didn’t want to say anything and risk becoming the new target.

I couldn’t blame them. There was nothing I could do but wait it out.

NO GUARANTEES

Perhaps you’ve been in a similar situation. Maybe it was in a boardroom; maybe it was in a kitchen or back office. If you work for other people, chances are you’ll have unpleasant interactions with your boss from time to time. Hopefully not too often, but this is what happens when you work for other people.

Not only do you have someone above you controlling how much you make, but when you’re dependent on somebody else for your livelihood (and the livelihood of your family), you end up taking all manner of abuse with a simple “yes sir” or “yes ma’am.”

Every time I think about it now, I wish I’d handed Brad my company laptop and walked out of the room.

At the time, my brain kept telling me I couldn’t leave. I didn’t believe I could make it on my own without a paycheck. I’d been doing some tests with affiliate marketing, but I couldn’t come close to replacing my salary if I walked out the door, no matter how tempting it was.
