While ETFs were first launched in the early nineties, they didn’t really break through into the mainstream until after the global financial crisis of 2008. Just as the 1987 crash helped to get index funds going, the 2008 debacle was the year that ETFs really expanded their base. Traders loved how they provided liquidity during that chaotic time, when liquidity was sometimes scarce. Meanwhile, long-term investors were disappointed once again that their active mutual funds largely didn’t do any better than the market, and so many of them started migrating over to ETFs. Since then, ETFs have been growing by $1 trillion every few years.
