An hour later, after dropping Sophie off at camp and making sure her mom was comfortable on the patio with a tall glass of iced tea and a copy of the Lake Summers Press, Jenna pushed all thoughts of Troy aside. She knew she had to get to work making the arrangements for the next six weeks. The new agenda she’d created for herself was intimidating. A week ago, she’d assumed she’d be back in Rye by now, cleaning out the house and waiting for brokers to start bringing potential buyers around. Staying in Lake Summers until mid-August meant much less time to pull off the big move. But she couldn’t let the prospect of juggling so much later throw her off her game. She’d work it out. The important thing was she was here now, in the one place she felt strong and capable. After all, she had once crashed into a brick wall right in this very town and lived to tell the tale. There was little you couldn’t do if you were strong enough to hit a brick wall and walk away with nothing worse than a scraped knee.

Sitting in the living room at her mother’s cherry writing desk, looking out onto the prairie grass and bayberry bushes at the back of the house, she got started on the phone. Remembering that Dr. Roberts had invited her to call with any questions, she found his business card in her bag and dialed him next to see if he had any recommendations for where to find that kind of help. He mentioned that his granddaughter, Sherry, had recently moved to town and was staying with him, and hoped to earn some money while she pursued a graduate degree in nursing.

“She was working the last few years as a registered nurse, and she’s terrific,” he said. “If you’d like to talk with her about helping your mom a few days a week, I’d be happy to put you two in touch.”

Jenna also called the head of the lakeside camp to extend Sophie’s enrollment through the middle of August. That would take them right up to her mother’s birthday on August 15th, after which she’d reach out to Lake Summers Middle School and begin the enrollment process for Sophie. She knew she needed to run this all by her daughter, who seemed happy to stay for now and explore the boxes in the basement but might need convincing to move for good. And she also needed to let Matt know her plans. But every time she started to call him, she changed her mind. She didn’t know how to explain herself without sounding as though she were fleeing from the mess she’d left behind. How could she make him see that she wasn’t
