Chapter 9

“Damn, it feels so good to be home,” I said as I walked into my condo.

My mother still wasn’t talking to me and Celeste had another business meeting so I arranged for a car to drive me home. I wanted to do it that way anyways. I craved the quiet time. It was crazy dealing with the reporters and such, but I did as Chase had suggested, so there weren’t many lurking around by the time I left. They were camped out in front of my building but Georgiano, the doormen, handled them.

As soon as I dropped my bags, I plopped down on the sofa and turned on the TV to order a movie off of On Demand. I really wanted to take it easy. The last couple months had been so full of plotting Rich’s downfall that it was necessary to give my mind a break. On top of that, I had been hit with what I figured was morning sickness the past few days so I was more concerned with my body and baby than Rich’s life and reputation which was already spiraling down the drain.

My phone started ringing as soon as the movie began to start. I chose to look at Addicted, a movie based off a book written by Zane. I was hoping to live vicariously through the main chick in the movie who was supposedly getting some hot, steamy sex. Especially since I wouldn’t be getting any for a while.

Bbbbrrrrrrinnnggg!

“Dammit!” I cursed, throwing the phone back on the sofa cushions next to me after I peeked at the screen.

It was Jermaine. I was not in the mood to deal with him at the moment…or his pleas for us to get back together and work things out. Something didn’t sit right with me when it came to him and I felt like continuing to be with him would be the absolute wrong thing to do. I’d accidentally done the wrong thing a few times out of ignorance but going back to Jermaine would be doing the wrong thing out of stupidity.

Ain’t nobody got time for that, I thought to myself as I dug my fingers into my huge bowl of popcorn and continued watching the movie.

I heard the soft noise and awoke immediately because, though a quiet sound, it was so out of place. As my eyes flashed open drowsily, I focused on the television screen which was frozen on the On Demand menu. Somewhere in between the hot sex scenes and the therapist appointments, I’d fallen asleep and the movie had continued without me.

Click!

I heard the clicking sound along with another dull shuffling noise and my ears were on alert immediately. I felt my heartbeat speed up in my chest. Something was wrong. Someone was in my home.

I tried to reach over slowly to grab my cellphone from beside me, but there was nothing there. I slowly slid my hand through the crease of the cushions as I searched as discretely as I could for it, but to no avail.
