Trent whistled as he put the coffee maker on. He actually liked taking care of someone.

In the past, he hadn’t taken care of anything. He didn’t even have a house plant. Not even a cactus that you can’t kill.

He put bread in the toaster, but didn’t put it down yet. His cell phone rang.

“Good morning.”

It was Janet. “You are way too cheery for this early,” she said.

“And what can I do for my lovely sister today?”

“Holy crap, Trent. I’m actually calling for Alice. I don’t have her cell number.”

“She’s in the shower. I can have her call you back.”

“I wanted to see if she’s wants to do a girls’ day today.”

“Well, she’s a little hung over. Zack and Mason took her out last night, remember?.”

“Oh, right. That explains it. Well, have her call me back.”

“Will do.”

He dropped his phone on the counter. Alice entered the kitchen looking better than she had before her shower.

“Hey, sunshine,” he said then kissed her. “Janet wants you to call her.”

“Janet?”

“Something about a girls’ day.”

She yawned. “Not sure I’m up to that.”

“Janet will understand.”

“I’ll call her after breakfast.”

Trent put the toast down. He poured a cup of coffee for Alice. “Go sit.”

She did as he suggested. She looked tired, still. Today would be a chill day. He hadn’t had one of those in years. He was probably supposed to see the guys for football, but he didn’t want to leave Alice.

He texted Zack that he couldn’t make it today.

“Lame,” Zack texted back.

“Weren’t you supposed to watch football with the guys today?” Alice said after a few sips of coffee.

“Yes, but I told them I couldn’t make it.”

“I wish you wouldn’t change your plans for me.”

“I’d rather spend the day with you.”

“If you’re sure.”

“I am. I have a few movies or we could find something on Netflix.”

“Either way is fine.”

After breakfast, during which Alice ate more than she thought she would, they settled on the couch, under a blanket to watch a chick flick. Trent gave Alice the first choice.

The doorbell rang just as he hit play.

“I’ll get it.”

He paused the movie. He opened the door and a perky voice came through.

“Hi, Trent.”

“Uh, hello, Denice.”

“I was wondering if you had any sugar I could use. I have none for my coffee.”

“Sure, come on in.”

Alice glanced back to see a very hot woman, scantily dressed, standing in the kitchen.

“Denice, this is my fiancé, Alice.”

Denice looked a little pained. “I would have dressed a little better if I’d known you had company.”

Alice rose to shake the woman’s hand. She had the distinct impression that she was being measured and judged. Was this woman after Trent? “Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise.”

Then she was dismissed. Denice’s gaze went back to full-on smile and looking at Trent. As if Alice didn’t merit a second glance. Deciding not to be offended, Alice snuggled back onto the couch.

She wondered why she hadn’t seen this woman before. Trent had never mentioned who lived in the other apartment. She didn’t want to be jealous, but this woman was hot.
