In the meantime, Shima's force began catching up to Nishimura's. This gave the admiral greater confidence and even the beginning of hope that he might successfully penetrate the Surigao Strait after all. Nevertheless, the Japanese remained on high alert, expecting the ambush that did in fact await them.

Over the next several hours, the PT boats continued their brave but futile attacks on the Japanese. Japanese jamming and the deteriorating weather both interfered with their radio signals, but enough transmissions leaked through to keep Oldendorf and his captains apprised of IJN progress northward. Despite launching many torpedoes, the PT boats inflicted no damage, in part due to the poor firing conditions caused by constant salvos of Japanese shells and other ordnance.
