Chapter Twelve

Leo drove home in a sex stupor, replaying the conversation with Nyla in his head.

“Stay,” he’d urged, kissing his way from her neck to her shoulder as she sat up in bed. “Not here, I mean. Come home with me and spend the night.”

She’d turned and smiled at him, wriggling into the borrowed sports bra before kissing him once on the mouth. “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

“Please?” he’d asked hopefully, already imagining what it would feel like to wake up with Nyla in his arms.

She’d laughed and bounced off the bed, rummaging on the floor for her clothes. “Your son, goofball. Isn’t he getting dropped off at nine?”

Crap. He’d almost forgotten, which wasn’t like him at all. He prided himself on being a devoted dad, the guy who remembered every baseball practice and parent-teacher conference. “I suck,” he’d admitted as he rolled off the bed to search for his pants.

“Don’t feel bad.” She’d turned to face him, fully dressed as he stood naked with his pants in hand. “Last month Mandi totally forgot Ryan’s mom was bringing him home at ten after they stayed to watch the other team in the finals at that tournament outside Seattle. We were halfway through a second bottle of wine when Seth came bounding through the front door.”

She’d clamped her mouth shut then, a guilty look passing over her face. “Shit. I didn’t mean to tell you that.”

“It’s okay.” God, she was adorable. Pants located, he’d tugged them up over his hips and buttoned his fly and stepped closer to kiss the warm spot at the base of her neck. “You’re right, it does make me feel better knowing I’m not the only parent shirking my duties for an evening of pleasure.”

“Mmmmm.” She’d melted against him then, seeming to forget her haste to get gone. “When can I see you again?”

“Tomorrow?” Too fucking eager, but so what? “Or how about Saturday night? Ryan’s mom drew driving duty for Sunday’s tournament, and they’re leaving late that evening. We could order sushi, stay up all night, wake up together Sunday morning. I’m not due at the game until late in the day on Sunday.”

She’d moaned again as he tugged aside the strap of her tank top to kiss the sensitive spot he’d found on her left shoulder. Kissing it again, he drew in a breath as she stepped away. “You’re forgetting brunch,” she murmured with her eyes closed.

“Brunch?”

“At my parents’ house.” She turned and put a hand on his chest, then stepped back. “Remember? Dad’s hoping you can help fix Mom’s pizzelle maker so she can do those special Polish cookies.”

Right. Fuck, he really was losing it. “We’re planning Seth’s graduation party and your dad’s surprising your mom with her early birthday gift.”

“Bingo.”

He’d dragged a hand down his face then, struggling to get a grip. “Sorry I’m being a shitty dad. Shitty ex-son-in-law, too.”

Nyla had stepped closer then, pulling him in for a kiss. “You’re the best guy I know. Best dad, best…well, everything.” Kudos to her for dodging the ex-son-in-law bit.
