Chapter 11

Domina

After my workout the next morning, I decide to find Caiden to see what he’s up to. I have to go to the shelter today, but I have a few hours to kill until then.

I don’t find Caiden in any of the usual haunts. By the time I’ve searched them all, I decide just to go get to work on translating that diary some more. I start on the passage where Catherine keeps complaining about someone yelling at her. Quickly I find a slight variation between the copy that I have been reading and the original.

In the translated version, the diary reads “she is always shouting and screaming.” The original diary says, “Semper domina est et murmurationis clamantes.” At first, I don’t think much about it, but after having translated the entire entry, I realize that it doesn’t quite translate the same. When I translate the sentence as a whole, it shows domina to mean “the lady.” So, the translation seemed correct. But when I translate domina by itself, I get a different feeling for it. I get three possible definitions:

1. Lady, lady-love,

2. Mistress of a family, wife,

3. Owner.

Translating it to “she” would be the easiest choice, but I can’t help but wonder if the author intended it to mean something else.

I’m still struggling over this passage when Jacob comes in. I look up, startled out of my work. Now that I have been hanging out with Zander, Caiden, and Brooklyn so much, Jacob hasn’t been around as much. He still trains me every morning and takes me to the shelter in the afternoons, but I don’t see him much outside of that.

“Hey, stranger. What are you up to?” I can’t stop the smile that spreads across my face. I miss bugging Jacob.

“Trying to keep tabs on a spoiled brat.” He smirks to let me know he is teasing, so I stick my tongue out. Might as well prove him right. “What are you working on?” He eyes the papers spread out in front of me, then pulls the Latin translator towards him.

“I’m trying to translate this diary from one of the earliest Reginas.” I sink back into my chair, exhausted by my attempts. “It was written in Latin originally. Someone translated it, but some of the passages felt off. I’m trying to go back and see if it was an issue with the translation.”

Jacob picks up the diary and looks it over, “For what purpose?” He doesn’t say it angrily or like he thinks I’m wasting my time. It’s just sheer curiosity.

“I’ve been trying to look into the Reginas to see if any of them mention how they learned to control their powers.” I don’t specify that I’m trying to control my Regina. That seems to be the point that most people get hung up on.

He nods, deep in thought. “We could add some exercises to help you control your power to our gym time. It’s been a long time since I had to learn it, but we all have to learn to control our powers sometime.
