CHAPTER NINE

Sarah fumed on her entire drive to town. How dare that obstinate man try to tell her what to do? After everything he had done and all the danger he had put the baby in, he had some nerve to tell her what was and wasn’t safe for her to do. Never in her life had she allowed a man to tell her what to do and she had no plans to start with a half-man, half-bear who had intended to kill her best friend’s child.

Skylar, for his part, was livid. He stormed into house, slamming the door behind him. Julia looked up from her spot inside, the baby cradled in her arms, with a look of understanding on her face.

“You tried to tell her not to go, didn’t you?” she said with a smirk on her face.

“She’s an unreasonable woman,” he bellowed.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” she replied with sympathy in her eyes.

“She just stormed right by me, like she was purposefully defying me.” He began to pace, trying to make sense of what had just happened.

“Knowing her, she was.” She offered a comforting smile, as though she knew the exact turmoil raging in his mind.

“Don’t women in your society defer to their men?” he asked abruptly.

“No, we certainly do not and I was unaware you were her man.” Her words were calm, but deliberate.

“That isn’t what I meant,” he growled.

“It’s what you said though,” she observed pointedly.

“I want nothing from that woman,” he exclaimed.

“Oh, I’ve seen the hungry way you look at her. I think we can both agree that you want one thing from her and you want it very badly.” Her unblinking gaze unnerved him a bit.

Suddenly, he was beginning to understand what his brother valued in this woman. She was a brave thing, full of heart. He thought a moment before deciding that it might do them both good to have an honest conversation on the subject.

“That’s simply sex, a biological necessity. It would mean nothing.” She could tell by his stance that he honestly thought that he was speaking the truth.

“Is that all you think you want from her?” She looked amused, attempting to suppress her laughter.

“Yes,” he answered curtly.

“Then I would advise against it,” she said, shaking her head as she spoke.

“Why?” he demanded.

“Well, Sarah doesn’t keep any man around for long after she has sex with them.” She said in nonchalantly, as though she was telling him her friend’s favorite food or color.

“That would be ideal.” He could picture it now, spending his days fighting the wolves and spending his nights in the bed of a grateful Sarah. Surely protecting a woman from vicious kills earned one everything one desired. He couldn’t remember a time when the thought of sleeping indoors seemed so appealing. The thought of her lying there, waiting for him, was pleasing indeed.

“Oh, it’s ideal for her. Nobody ever gets close enough to let her down. It’s the men who have a hard time after.” Her words surprised him.
