Eileen was nervous. But she couldn’t pinpoint exactly why.

Fear of Dane wasn’t the cause. She’d never been happier to see anyone in her whole life as she had him after seeing that stranger lurking around the cabin. Stupid, maybe. She barely knew Dane better than she knew the stranger. But Lorne trusted him. And Kendra trusted Lorne. And she trusted Kendra.

Besides that, she felt like she could trust Dane. And, much to her family’s annoyance, she went with her gut far more often than she went with her head.

But she didn’t want to disappoint him.

However, holding out on him any longer wasn’t an option. She couldn’t justify it for any reason other than her pride. And her pride could be putting both of them in danger if he felt like he couldn’t really trust her. If something big was going on—and she sensed it was—then she didn’t want Dane and Maggie spending precious time looking at her when they could be finding whoever was responsible for trying to hurt Kendra.

“I was hiding.”

“From who?” He was immediately on guard. A defensive posture, for her. She knew it was impossible, but she could have sworn he got bigger. And he stepped closer to her, too close for anyone else. But for some reason, she didn’t mind Dane in her personal bubble.

The whole thing would’ve been touching, but she was about ready to really piss him off.

“My family,” she confessed, cringing. Waiting for him to yell. When he didn’t say anything, she opened her eyes and looked up at him.

Brows raised, he said, “I take it they are trying to hurt you.”

“Not physically,” she grumbled. The spark of amusement in his eyes made her angry for some reason. She hadn’t wanted him to be mad, but amused wasn’t a good reaction either. “I know this might be nothing serious to you, but it’s serious to me. My family is…overbearing. Overwhelming. And I don’t like having my future decided for me.”

His expression sobered. “I wasn’t laughing at you. I was relieved.” His eyes locked on hers. “I don’t like the idea of anyone trying to hurt you.”

Her chest warmed at his words and his gaze. “I don’t like the idea of anyone trying to hurt me either.” Her joke to try to alleviate some of the tension worked partially, but he didn’t take a step back.

“What is that they’re trying to get you to do?”

Because his eyes sparkled with real interest, she decided to answer him. “They want me to join the family business. We make shipping supplies.” She shuddered at the pure boringness of that statement.

His smile widened. “And you don’t want to contribute to the shipping supply empire?”

She laughed. When he put it that way… Sure didn’t sound so scary. Then again, the man had never met her mother. “No, I don’t. The problem is, I haven’t figured out exactly what I do want to do yet. And they’re taking my inaction to mean that I have no drive to do anything else.
