IN HIS BOOK Play Anything, technologist and game designer Ian Bogost describes dragging his young daughter through a mall and suddenly realizing that while he was focused on completing his various necessary tasks and errands, she had made a game of avoiding stepping on the boundaries of the shopping center’s square tiles. Of course, there’s nothing particularly shocking about that. Children don’t need to be told that they can convert almost anything into a game or an amusement. They just do it.

Part of Bogost’s goal is to help adults think that way, too. Learn to spot new and unintended possibilities, the hidden potentials, within existing forms and limits—and play them. Bogost suggests treating Walmart as a playground.
