Chapter Seventeen

Lena

I watch Jake’s truck pull away from our meeting place and I head to the river to wash off his scent. I hang my head in my hands, water trickling from strands of it. The only way we can be together is in secret, or cause our packs to fight.

The whole time we were talking, I thought about telling him that I’ve been restricted to the house. I’m thankful that Nathan didn’t think to alpha command me to be bound to the house.

This time at least I thought to bring soap, so I don’t have to shower when I get home again, just in case. Soon, the sounds of Jake’s car fade, and there’s just the bats and the river. A tear slips down my cheek and I sit in the river all alone.

After I’m clean, I shift into my wolf and she shakes her coat, wants to howl at the moon, but we can’t give away that we’re out here. I pick my clothes up in my mouth, abandon the soap and start to pick my way through the forest.

An owl flies ahead and I crouch low at the sound, then relax. It’s easy enough to sneak through the patrols, but only because I know the trails and the times patrols come past. If an outsider was trying to sneak in, they’d have a much harder time sneaking through.

The back of our territory is less guarded too, as it backs onto the big forest and only the service road. Less threats would come from there anyway, and any pack that wanted to attack us would have to go the long way round anyway, and we’d notice the movements.

I crest a hill and see our houses clustered at the bottom. A few of them have smoke coming from the chimneys, and I can see the lights in the big house are still on.

For a moment I wonder what it’d be like to be Nathan’s mate, to rule the pack like he does, with an iron fist and no respect for the women. I’d have his young; I wonder if they’d grow up to be just as repulsive as him.

As I think, I know I’m going to have to leave my pack, and the thought makes my heart break, heavy in my chest. I’ve been here my whole life, I know all these shifters. What am I going to do without them? What are they going to do without me?

I sigh, wishing Jeremy was still here. Even that feels like a betrayal of Jake in a way – but I do wish he was here.

I shake out my coat and trot down the hill, pausing halfway and making sure I’m upwind of the patrol that should go past in the next five, ten minutes.

I crouch low and smell the soil, rich and earthy.

After a few minutes, the night patrol goes past. They’re not chatty like they sometimes are, they all look as exhausted as I feel, but they haven’t had a midnight tryst to give them a bit of a boost.
