Sergeant First Class Greg Strong

“At night we would put the Cougars in a square inside the ANA perimeter. Some of the guys would sleep on the ground, some took cots, and I slept in the back of the truck. My vest was in the turret, so that all I had to do was stand back to the turret and I was ready to go. We had some great instances out there. Merseal and John Sury are great outdoorsmen. DynCorp thought they would be smart and bring us steaks. They brought steaks and charcoal, but no grill to cook them on. We all went and found the biggest flat rocks we could find, and we washed the rocks. We started the charcoal and put the rocks on top of them and then cooked the steaks on the flat rocks. Then the DynCorp people said, ‘Hey, can we have one?’ We responded, ‘Hey, dudes, you left us out in the cold and we dealt with it. You deal with it.’

“That night we had to pull fire watch, but it’s kind of hard to pull fire watch if you don’t have a fire. Merseal goes, ‘We will build a woodless fire.’ We all had this crazy look on our faces. He dug a cat hole about two foot by two foot and about two foot deep. Then he poured JP8 diesel fuel in it. Then he put on a layer of sand and poured it again. He did that over and over until he was at the top of the hole.

“He lit the fuel, which was slow burning. As that layer of fuel began to die down, you could remove the layer of sand and the next layer of fuel would burn. We had a fire all night. It was the coolest thing I ever saw.”
