T HE C ONSOLIDATION OF THE P ROTESTANT M OVEMENT 143
Nîmes wrote urgent letters to Geneva to request an additional pastor. 64 In order to understand who was entering the Protestant community during the year
following the adoption of the cahier, I compiled a list of every person men-
tioned in the consistory records, other than the initial leadership discussed
above, from its founding on March 23, 1561, through February 28, 1562. 65 Some of these individuals fi rst appeared or spoke at a meeting in this period; others
were brought before the consistory because of some moral lapse or because
they were poor and were thought worthy of receiving charity. Many of the
references are fragmentary, and others could not be identifi ed with suffi cient
certainty in the database, but in all 113 (7 of them women) could be. The results
are given in Appendix A.
Judging from the statistics, the trends noted at the beginning of this chap-
ter only accelerated in 1561–1562, even though the group under examination
here was not composed of leaders per se. By 1562, the percentage of lawyers
among the Protestants had increased even beyond what it was in 1561, and the
percentage of high-status individuals (offi cials, seigneurs, etc.) was much
higher than ever before. The obvious explanation is that offi cials had far more
to lose than other members of the elite and therefore required strong persua-
sion. By 1562, the social pressure to convert must have been very strong. By
contrast, the percentage of agricultural workers dropped even further. The
movement had never had much success in that class, and the few farmers it
had attracted were drowned by the fl ood of new, more desirable recruits. The
