Brynn hummed along with the songs on her smartphone playlist as she meticulously handstitched the baby quilt. Normally she would’ve resented giving up time for her crafting projects, but the hours she’d spent with Garrett were not only enjoyable but enlightening. The taciturn rancher had revealed another side of his personality she’d found irresistible. He had a way of looking at her that told her he was giving her his undivided attention. That he was truly hearing and listening to what she had to say.

Garrett had mentioned that he was thirteen years older as if it would become a barrier to their becoming friends, while to her age was always a number. And she’d lost count of the oh-so-many times she’d been referred to as an old soul. The sobriquet had bothered her as a child because she’d believed it was something bad, but as she’d gown older she’d proudly accepted the label to mean she was wise beyond her years.

Her cell phone rang and she glanced over at the screen. It was Susanna Henry. Brynn put aside the needle and thread and picked up the phone.

“Hello, Susanna.”

“Did I catch you at a wrong time?”

“No. I was just relaxing. What’s up?”

“How would you like to go with me tomorrow to Evy’s boutique?”

“Sure. What time and where should I meet you?”

“I’ll come and pick you up, say, around noon. We’ll shop and then have a late lunch.”

Brynn paused. “Aren’t you working at the theater tomorrow?”

“Yes, but my hours are flexible.”

“If that’s the case, then I’ll treat you to lunch at my place.” Brynn figured if Susanna was going to tell her about Garrett not dating, then she would’ve preferred they not discuss it in a restaurant where there was the possibility of someone eavesdropping on their conversation.

“Nice move, Brynn. Eating at your place means we can talk about anyone and everything.”

She smiled even though Susanna couldn’t see her. “I’m glad you caught my drift.”

Susanna’s laugh came through the earpiece. “I’ll text you once I’m close to your building.”

“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Brynn ended the call and then went back to quilting. As she stitched, she recalled an earlier conversation with Susanna. When Susanna had mentioned Garrett didn’t date, it had made Brynn wonder why. If he’d believed their being seen together in public wasn’t dating, then what was it? Whenever she was seen with the same man more than a few times, most people thought of them as dating. However, it hadn’t happened with Miles because they’d managed to conceal their relationship from everyone. He’d made her promise to wait until he’d achieved the celebrity status he’d been relentlessly chasing before going public.

But his good-guy marketable image imploded once one of his baby mamas spoke up. He’d come crawling back and, in an effort to repair his image, he’d proposed marriage. Brynn had sent him on his way.

It had taken almost two years for Brynn to allow herself to be seen with a man and, unlike what she’d shared with Miles, she knew exactly where she stood with Garrett.
