Brynn hummed along with the songs on her smartphone playlist as she meticulously handstitched the baby quilt. Normally she wouldâve resented giving up time for her crafting projects, but the hours sheâd spent with Garrett were not only enjoyable but enlightening. The taciturn rancher had revealed another side of his personality sheâd found irresistible. He had a way of looking at her that told her he was giving her his undivided attention. That he was truly hearing and listening to what she had to say.
Garrett had mentioned that he was thirteen years older as if it would become a barrier to their becoming friends, while to her age was always a number. And sheâd lost count of the oh-so-many times sheâd been referred to as an old soul. The sobriquet had bothered her as a child because sheâd believed it was something bad, but as sheâd gown older sheâd proudly accepted the label to mean she was wise beyond her years.
Her cell phone rang and she glanced over at the screen. It was Susanna Henry. Brynn put aside the needle and thread and picked up the phone.
âHello, Susanna.â
âDid I catch you at a wrong time?â
âNo. I was just relaxing. Whatâs up?â
âHow would you like to go with me tomorrow to Evyâs boutique?â
âSure. What time and where should I meet you?â
âIâll come and pick you up, say, around noon. Weâll shop and then have a late lunch.â
Brynn paused. âArenât you working at the theater tomorrow?â
âYes, but my hours are flexible.â
âIf thatâs the case, then Iâll treat you to lunch at my place.â Brynn figured if Susanna was going to tell her about Garrett not dating, then she wouldâve preferred they not discuss it in a restaurant where there was the possibility of someone eavesdropping on their conversation.
âNice move, Brynn. Eating at your place means we can talk about anyone and everything.â
She smiled even though Susanna couldnât see her. âIâm glad you caught my drift.â
Susannaâs laugh came through the earpiece. âIâll text you once Iâm close to your building.â
âOkay. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
Brynn ended the call and then went back to quilting. As she stitched, she recalled an earlier conversation with Susanna. When Susanna had mentioned Garrett didnât date, it had made Brynn wonder why. If heâd believed their being seen together in public wasnât dating, then what was it? Whenever she was seen with the same man more than a few times, most people thought of them as dating. However, it hadnât happened with Miles because theyâd managed to conceal their relationship from everyone. Heâd made her promise to wait until heâd achieved the celebrity status heâd been relentlessly chasing before going public.
But his good-guy marketable image imploded once one of his baby mamas spoke up. Heâd come crawling back and, in an effort to repair his image, heâd proposed marriage. Brynn had sent him on his way.
It had taken almost two years for Brynn to allow herself to be seen with a man and, unlike what sheâd shared with Miles, she knew exactly where she stood with Garrett.
