Chapter 22

“What exactly has been going on at school? Who were those two?” My dad asked me directly, and I bit my tongue for a moment. I’m still pissed as hell with him, and that hasn’t lessened now that the very thing I wanted to avoid just happened. I fold my arms and look over my shoulder to check if Amber is out of earshot. She’s out back with Lucia, so I return my attention to my father.

“My Thrall was so desperate to see me that, having been denied my contact and comfort, she came to the cafe. She was clearly followed, and our relationship has been exposed.” I point at him with a scowl on my face. “You get a slice of blame for that. This wouldn’t have happened if she was deprived of my affection and knew she’d see me at her place later.”

“You can’t be serious?” His eyes shimmer angrily, and he puts his fists on his hips. “What, exactly, just happened that you’ve decided to blame me for this time?”

“She kissed me, and the school’s king and queen of assholery just streamed the whole thing to humiliate Amber. For kissing the painted freak.” I point at my face with a scowl on it. “That’s me, by the way, and I’ve been letting all that shit go to remain under the radar. The cosmetics and face wipes are in my locker. The social media shitshow with my name and face plastered all over it. Posters of my face painted like a clown. Being shoved around. The works. I’ve let it go every single time.”

“I had no idea.” Of course he didn’t know. I didn’t tell him. He would have just told me to keep my head down anyway, since I only have a few months left to graduate. “Son, why didn’t you tell me?” He reached for me, but I rolled my shoulder to keep him from touching me.

“It wouldn’t have made a difference. I don’t give a shit about some loser mortals anyway. I only care about Amber, and the thought of them doing all that shite to her is what worries me. In fact, it’s making me pretty furious.” My jaw felt tight as I resisted the urge to let it elongate and shift into wolf jaws. “I just needed to get through another couple of months in the shadows, and then we would have been clear of those jerks. We could have been openly together since they would all go to different colleges and stuff.” I shrug and take a deep breath, as the urge to curse and snarl was great, but I didn’t fancy getting a clip up the head for it. Especially considering what I was going to ask him for. “I won’t let them hurt her.”

“You fear they will hurt her?” My father curled his hands into fists, and his hazel eyes shimmered down at me. “Truly?”

“They might. The guys have shoved me around plenty, but I think they’ll hurt her mind and soul rather than her body.
