Chapter 29

GABE

PRESENT

I twisted the cap off the bottle of water and drained half of it in one go, then poured the rest over my head. Dex had cranked up the heat in our practice studio to Gobi Desert temperatures, and I think I sweated away fifty percent of my body weight during the two hours I’d spent getting the vocals right on a track we were trying to lay down. I’d already stripped off my t-shirt and was giving serious consideration to removing my jeans as well, only I was going commando beneath them. It wouldn’t be the first time any of the guys had seen my dick, I wasn’t ashamed of what God had graced me with, but no one needed to see that shit during a recording session.

“Fuck’s sake, man, turn the heat down,” I bellowed for probably the hundredth time.

“No can do, buddy,” Dex yelled back. “Karl says sweating rock stars is a hot commodity.”

I rolled my eyes. “Karl is a fucking asshole. Where is he? Why isn’t he in here sweating with us?”

“He’s not a rock star. He’s just the man who makes them.” Seth said quietly from behind me.

He was also dripping in sweat and bottled water. His fingers rested on the strings of his guitar and he idly strummed out a tune.

I quirked a brow. “If you’re gonna play it, man, do it properly.”

He flashed me a rare grin and started to play “Roll Over Beethoven”. I wandered over to the microphone and launched into the lyrics. Dex picked up his bass and Luca settled behind his drums and before long we were having an impromptu jam session, belting out covers of our favourite classics.

Karl arrived just after I picked up one of my guitars and Seth and I were harmonising on Beatles songs. He leaned against the wall, sipping his coffee while we sang “Run For Your Life”.

“Is that a warning?” he asked when we wrapped it up.

I looked around. “Don’t see any women here to warn.” I took the coffee cup he offered me. “Nice of you to finally show up.”

“I thought you’d be safe enough here—nothing here you can get into trouble with.” He sauntered over to the lounge area. “The girl you took to the premiere the other night …”

I stiffened. I hadn’t heard from Harper since that night. Candice had spoken to her on Monday and assured me she had seemed fine, but now it was Thursday and I was starting to wonder if she’d ghosted me. Had I pushed it too far watching her get off for me?

“Gabe? Earth to Gabe?” Karl’s fingers snapping in front of my face brought my focus back to him.

“What about her?”

“It was the chick you were dating when I first signed you … Harper? The one you did the interview about.”

“We weren’t dating back then, but yeah, it was Harper.”

“Why the sudden interest in her again?”

“My interest in her never left. It just took a short hiatus.
