A closer look at the sad defeat of Samson shows that his defeat was the result of more than a bad haircut—it was the result of a long wayward walk down a path of immorality. All along the way, he dishonored his vows to follow God as a Nazirite.

When Samson was born, his mother had vowed to consecrate him for the Nazirite priesthood. She was setting him apart as an act of worship, so that he might live for God. She never cut his hair, and she led him to live a life of moral purity.

As he entered adulthood, though, Samson’s impetuousness gave way to indulgence. He compromised his moral standards and began pursuing relationships with immoral, ungodly women. He repeatedly gave in to his passions and his furies, often with dramatic and deadly consequences.

When Samson finally succumbed to Delilah, it was no accident or real surprise. Samson had worked with determination to be brought down by his own weaknesses. The only real surprise was that he withstood his enemies’ advances as long as he did. In the end, his mighty muscles were no match for his weak will. He caved and the Philistines quickly captured him.
